team met defeat at the hands of the
McCalls club Saturday afternoon In a
game that was exciting, altho scores on
both sides ran up Into large figures.
We did not place a notice of the re
sult In any paper, but the Southern
Shop’s team takes occasion to do so,
and very atrange to aay. they forgot the
result of the game. The game went
eleven Innings. McCalls winning by the
score of 16 to 15, altho the notice In
The Constitution said that the Southern
were victors by the score of 7 to 6.

Lesosne, of Charleston, a member of
the Carolina Yacht Club, broke the local
records Saturday evening by swimming
from the club house to Sullivans Island,
which Is about five miles. He
swam without resting, accompanied by
a rowboat, and bucked the tide for
halt the distance. The time was three
hours and a half.
YERKES IS WINNING.
Yerkes, the former Nashville pitcher
who was farmed by BUI Bernhard to
Galveston, twirled a game last Thurs
day and won by the score of 10 to 2.
The Austin players got only seven hits,
while the home club made 16. Out of
four times at bat Yerkes got one run

WASHINGTON,"July 13.—In refer
ence to a letter of protest received at
the war department against the play
ing In free concerts of the Fourteenth
Artillery band, the poet commander at
Fort Screven. Georgia, has explained
to the satisfaction of the military au
thorities that the performance of the
band la In no respect a violation of the
existing law forbidding competition
with local musicians by military bands.
It Is held that the law does not con
template prohibiting cltlzene enjoying
the benefit of music rendered by mili
tary bands, but forbid, members of
such organizations receiving further re
muneration In addition to their army
pay for playing off the reservation,
when by doing so .they come Into com
petition with local muilclana.

Baptist Missionary Institute, repre
senting the middle Cherokee, Floyd,
Polk. Gordon. Stone Mountain and Noon
Day Associations of the Baptist church,
at a recent session at the First Baptist
church had brought before them by
Mrs. Sam P. Jones an article In The
Atlanta Georgian stating that Seaborn
Wright, of Floyd, would Introduce a
bill In the legislature of Georgia to
place a special tax upon "all ‘near-
beers' or other drinks of similar na
ture." the proceeds to be devoted to the
University of Georgia.
The ladles were horrified at the
thought of using blood money to ed
ucate our children and so expressed
themselves by a rising vote of protest.
