convention of Independent Telephone
Companies completed He deliberation*
today and an adjournment era* had
for th* meeting In Dawaon, Oil, on
the fourth Tueaday In February, 1909.
The convention wa* largely attended,
there being 19,933 telephone* repre-
aanted.
A number of Independent manufac
turer* were repreeented. Including
ekllled engineer* and other eminent tel
ephone men.
It la claimed that aervlce both local
and long dlatance will be Improved as
a result of thla meeting. Dr. J. G.
Dean, of Dawaon, Oa., wa* elected
president; W. N. Drake, of Pelham,
secretary and treasurer; Dr. W. L.
Moor, of Tallahassee, vice president of
Florida, and T. E. Gurr, of Balnbrldge,
Vies president of Georgia.
DAILY FREIGHT 8ERVICE
WILL BE RESTORED

ginning on the 14th. a dally freight
aervlce will bo put on again between
Dover and Dublin on the Central of
Georgia railway. In the early summer
the daily schedule was discontinued
between these two points, and Instead
three freight trains a week were oper
ated. This gave the people along the
line of the road a very poor freight

Gainesville had the distinction last
ntght of hearing a candidate for the
vice presidency of the United States.
Ho waa Hon. Aaron S. Watklna, of
Ohio, Prohibition nominee for the vice
presidency, and he came to talk to the
people of thla sactlon at the city hall In
Gnlneavllls. Why he should have
chosen Gainesville, which la prover
bially the "dryest" prohibition town In
this section, Is not known. There’s
nothing of a "wet” nature dispensed In
the Queen City but near-beer. Some
declare It ahould be called "faraway
beer.”

Tedder, e prominent resident of Pen-
sacnla, Fla., who, with hi* wife and
daughter, has been spending the sum
mer In western North Carolina, has
been arretted here on a warrant sworn
out by Rev. J. C. Cogglne, preeldent of
the Holman Christian Institute, of
Black Mountain, charging slander, and
asking damages to the amount of 120,-
000. Mr. Tedder wa* taken Into cus
tody and later released on 15,000 bond.

The Suit Is brought by the Rev. Mr.
Coggins as th cremit of a loss of two
railway tickets belonging to Mr. Ted
der, who at th* time waa stopping at
Black Mountain with hla family. Later

der at Asheville, and It la charged that
the Initial, on the tickets were
changed, and that a profane message
accompanied them.

Hargett and Max Goldstein, two at
torneys of this city, had quite a lively
light In the lobby of Justice Hargett's
court room yesterday, and several
blows were passed. Ooidsteln accused
Hargett of calling him a vile name, It
Is said, and struck the latter, who
seised a piece of plank and was about
to strike Goldstein when the Intter’i
brother and another man became mixed
up In the fight. The party was Anally
separated and no one was seriously
hurl. The police made cases against
all the men.

The resolution for adjournment pro
vides that the legislature convene No
vember 14, after the election, and elect
to the senate the person receiving the
largest vote at the primary. Adjourn
ment was brought about by Governor
Cummins, who asked Ills friends to

term and declared that he "waived his

ceed the late Colonel C. C. Sanders, and
elected Robert J. Sanders as vice preel
dent to succeed Dr. J. W. Belley, who
resigned.
The election Is for the unexplred
term to January 1, 1(49. To All the
vacancy on the board of directors
caused by the death of Colonel San
der* and the resignation of Dr. Bailey,
R. J. Sanders and John H. Hoach were
elected. Dr. Bailey voluntarily retires
on account of hla age and III health.
Mr. Atkins, who Is elected president.

While is Pardoned.
As a result of ceaseless and untiring
efforts on tho part of his wife, Walter
J. White, sent up over two years ago to
serve a life sentence In the Georgia
penitentiary, received his freedom on
Thursday. HI* wife went out to the
camp of the Chattahoochee Brick Com
pany, showed the pardon and look her
husband to the home at 339 Petere-st.,
that was waiting for him. White waa
convicted of having killed Thomas
Quinn on October 19. 1905.
