Regular Study Classes For
Social Work Are Con
templated. *
PI,ns have been made by Secretary
Joseph C. Lngan. of the Associated
Charities, for carrying out the work of
the organization this winter, which will
Increase the efficiency of the associa
tion. In addition to the regular staff
of workers, Mr. Logan has secured the
services of thirty-nine volunteers—
members of the association who are
interested In charity work.
These have been divided Into com
mittees and meetings, will be held every
other week, when reports will be made
and cases under supervision, will be
thoroughly discussed.
The alternate weeks will be devoted
to a study class, all the committees
meeting together. Others besides the
members of the committees will be In
vited to attend these meetings and Sec-
re tarv Logan hopes that the friendly
visitors will bring their friends.
•The object of this .class," said Mr.
Logan, "will be to get a broader knowl
edge of social work, especially the
work carried on In Atlanta and the
relation of that work to the families
under our care. Different types of
rases will be taken up for discussion as
suggested by special families with |
which we have been dealing. Some of
these Will be families where there Is a
widow with dependent children or
where the father Is a drunkard or the
mother an Improper person to care for
the children. The attempt will be made
to arrive at a clearer understanding of
both the local conditions that are con-
tilbutory factors In causing distress
and the best theories of handling types
of cases and how far these theories can
he applied to Atlanta.”
At the next meeting, to be held on
Thursday morning at 11 o'clock. Sec
retary- Logan will dlecuss the relief
work Incident to the Augusta flood.
ALL THE THEATERS
I From Hayward k Clark.
CHICAGO. Sept. 46.—Bartlett, Patten A
■ Co.: Notwithstanding our large receipts in
. the northwest, believe « « are going to hare
an advancing wheat market. Receipts of
corn slightly over the estimate, but the east
ern demand ia very poor. s
Receipts of oats over the estimate, but
not large enough to cause any weakness, as
demand ia fairly good.
Liverpool cables: “Wheat strong with an
active demand. The weather in England
continues very unfavorable. Corn very firm
ion account of small atoeka."
1 Armour brokers have been big buyers of
December wheat all the morning and selling
all the September the market would take.
New York wires: “There ia good demand
for Manitoba wheat this morning.”
All grain belt fair tonight and Thursday.
Heavy commission houses selling off long
December broke wheat from 904 c to 99 4 r.
Corn opened irregular. December liquid* •
tion was free and general. Buyers working
quietly and deliberately.
Knight, McDougs! and Partridge leading
buyers of December wheat. Partridge sell
ing September. Local long wheat coming out
checked the advance.
Chicago Inter-Ocean: Those who are bull
ish on wheat say they expect to see Septem
her sell up very anarplr in the next two weeks,
and that December will eventually sell higher
than September, as thay regard it heavily
oversold. It was gossip that shorts ’ “
tember are in a bad way. There
3,800,000 bushels of No. 3 red wheat here
and 89S.000 bushels No. 3 hard that ia de
liverable on contract. Elevator men deliver
wheat on September sales each day, and at
the samo time are paying 4 to lc over Sep
tember for fresh receipts. There is no hope
of getting a large run of wheat here unless
K lfea advance to a large premium over St.
uis and Kansas City. Sentiment in corn
trade was very bearish. It was so much ao
that it called forth the remark from one
close observer that It was unanimous to be
bearish for a big decline aa light atoeka
caused congestion on the bear side every time
the market has a good break.

DAILY 8T0CK LETTER
NEW YORK. S.pt. 16.—-The declln#
In the mark,! today was more axten-
alv, than for mnnthz past. Th« selling:
appeared In all parts nt the list and
was for both Inside and public account.
Professional! were quick to detect In
side selllna snd helped to force llqu(-
datlon. Rallies from time to time
served only to give opportunities to the
beers to put out more stock. Even the
declaration of (he regular quarterly
dividend on New Tork Central did not
serve to sustain prlcea for any length
of time. At the start a weak opening
brought support and the market was
prevented from becoming demoralized.
The later rallies were due to covering
of shorts and the market became dull
on the hard spots, i Political develop
ments were the controlling factors.
Pears of a Bryan slump prevented sup.
port on the recessions. Hill stocks re
ceived the brunt of,the hear attack, and
while the metal atoeka held firm In the
morning dealing!, concentrated selling
tn the afternoon session brought about
declines In Amalgamated, Lead and
Smelters. The bear arguments were
gold exports and political matters. The
shake-out has been more or less severe.
We lock for some recoveries from these
levels.
