DECLARES GARBER
President of Match Trust
Gives Railroads Severe
Drubbing.
CHICAGO. D,o. 9.—The railroad,,
particularly the Eaatem line,, that have
been threatening an arbitrary Increaee
In freight rates for several month,,
were given a severe drubbing last night
by O. C. Barber, president of the Dla.
mond Match Company, (peaking at the
annual banquet of the Illinois Manu-
facturer,’ Association at the Congress
Hotel.
‘•Highway robbers" was one of the
mild terms that Mr. Barber applied to
the railroads. Ho charged them with
assuming a public-beggar attitude—
trying to humble the people, watering
stock, absorbing all the profits of busi
ness In the country and holding the
states under tbelr political control. The
interstate commerce commission, Mr.
Barber declared, was Impotent to deal
with the problem.
All this was said In the presence and
with particular application to W. C.
Brown, senior vice president of the New
York Central lines, who has been con
ducting a campaign among the shippers
In the matter of the freight rate In
crease.
Mr. Brown followed Mr. Barber on
the program, but he declined the chal
lenge to address, tho It seemed to cost
him some effort.
