formal reception to be held at the Boys’
club Thursday night at 8 o’clock. A

several selections on the piano.

of family, leaving a widow and several

Cannon declared In a public address to
a delegation of the Ohio River Im
provement Association, who had pre
sented him with a memorial urging a
$63,000,000 Improvement of the Ohio
river, that never, since 18B0, had a ma-

fact It would rest'with the committee
on rivers and hnrbor* to make recom

ters pertaining to the Improvement of

bonds for-the proposed Improvements,
he called attention to the fact that at
present all Improvements of the kind
contemplated are made under contract
and said that the country never had
failed yet to provide the money for
such work.
PLANS FOR LIBRARY
PROVE SATISFACTORY
Final plans and specifications for the
branch Carnegie Library in the Fifth
w'ard, which will be located at the cor
ner of Luckle-st. and West Merrlttn-
avc., have been drawn by the archi
tects, and the contract for the new
building will soon be let by the build
ings and grounds committee of the
Carnegie Library board.
Tile Fifth ward library will cost $15,-
000, including the furnishings. The
building will be constructed on the
colonial style, with a columned portico,
and will consist of one story and a
basement. Brick covered with stucco
will be used for the exterior, with
trimmings In marble and wood.
The main floor will consist of one
general room. Opposite the vestibule
entrance will be nn alcove containing
an attractive fireplace on each side of
which will be window* with seats ar
ranged for reading.
An attractive and unique frieze con
taining paintings on burlap or tbs best
known characters In the Uncle Remus
stories, will extend around the main
room.
It was In 1506 that Mrs. Max How-

age of 107, ’’Aunt” Jennie Grant, a ne
gro. died at her home here »fter a lin
gering Illness. Prior to her Illness she
did all her house work, could hoe and
pick cotton and thread a needle with
the greatest esse.
It le said on good authority that she
had twenty-five or more greatgrand
children.

1908, and hence the great rush. From
709 to 800 a day are crowding the tax
collector's office clamoring to settle
their arrearages.
It look* like aa election day and
everybody crowding In to vote for the
popular candidate. Mr. Stewart and

ers polite and quick attention, that Is
quick a* circumstances allow. It Is
rare and even pleasing sight, says

DEATH OF V/. F. VANDIVER
REMOVES WEALTHY MAN
MONTGOMERY. Ala., Dee. 10—Wil
liam Frank Vandiver, a distinguished
Alabaman, promoter, philanthropist,
capitalist and one of the first cltlxens of
Montgomery, died suddenly at his
home yesterday.
Mr. Vandiver was bom In Oglethorpe
county, Georgia, October 5. 1850. In
1871 he came to Montgomery end ac
cepted a position aa clerk. Mr. Vandi
ver le survived by one daughter, Mrs.
L. B. Whitfield, and two sons, H. F.
Vandiver and R. M. Vandiver; a half-
brother, R. 51. Henderson, partner In
the establishment of W. F. Vandiver &
Co.; two sisters, Mrs. R. L. Thornton,
of this city, and Mr*. T. R. McCarty, of
Birmingham.
