THE FAMILY KNOWN A$ “THEY’
What "They” Say—The Gossip of the World Presented
Objeot Lesson Seen and Heard in the Making. v
By ELLA WHEELER WILCOX.
T HE Young Person asked once upon
a time: 'TWiy Is It that every
thing that Is pleasant I; bad for
you, and everything that Is good, for
you Is unpleasant?"
But If tho Young Person will go to
Daly's Theater ehe trill And something
In the way of an entertainment that Is
decidedly pleasant, and at the same
time Is good for the listener nnd be
holder.
A play which entertains the mind,
holds ths attention, stirs the emotion
and makes ohe wish It were longer,
nrely contains a helpful lesson at the
same time. .
Seldom does the play with a purpoeo
leave you unconscious of Its moral until
U Is all over.
But these are a few of the unusual
qualities which combine with many
other features to render "Tho World
and His Wife” one of the notabl#
dramas of the season In New York.
We alt go to the theater to be enter
tained and amused. Wo do not go to
be reformed or Instructed. And yet It
I" sn ImpoeMblllty r„ r any human Mag
to leave a playhouse, where he has
been sufficiently interested to escape
boredom, without being In soma smalt
degree influenced for better or for
worse. ,
Our mental processes are beginning
to be understood by science as braln-
bulldlng processes. Evtry thought,
emotion and feeling Is a potter’s hand,
modelling away at tke brain, and mold
ing It Into new shapes or solidifying ths
old shape.
Sad, Olad, Mad and Bad thoughts all
do their own work In their own way.
and the result does not show In an
hour or a year; It shows In time.
However bright a man may be natur
ally, If he reads only trashy books and
only trashy plays, after a few
years he will talk only trash, because
he has furnished hla brain calls with no
batter material.
The theater today Is a mors subtly
powerful Influence on society than the
church. More people attend theaters
than churches, and thousands who are
i give little or no thought to
hear. They go as a duty

It has been said for some time, that New

Now we here another play which revolves
about s big central moral Idea; s play full
