the discovery that the Canadian Pacific rail
road has Invaded .New York city by wny
of the Now Ilsvea and threatens n flash-
lng rate war. The large abort interest in
tha stock market made It possible t<> ■ h.»-ic

cause. Every possible precaution was
taken to prevent uneasiness In the market.
The tractions were also made very strong,
bat there is specific reason for their
fth, nnd they may continue to advance,
-- tho the xenernl list declines. Smelters
wns braced up by the atatement of Daniel
Oufjrtnbelm. which ridiculed the opposition
to the Hmelter trust. Everybody under-
threati'ned. nnd some clever market ope
tora are taking advantage of the weak
sltlon of this stock to hammer It. Most
conservative people In Wall-at are adopting
a cautious attitude until they can discover
how the Canadian Pacific rate war is going
to terminate.
