ministers explain matter
OF SUNDAY STORE CLOSING
The following communication has
t»'n received with a requesV'thal It'his
published:
To the Editor of The Atlanta Georgian:
We, the committee of the Evangel-
Ital Ministers’ Association of Atlanta,
respectfully ask space In your paper to
reply to on editorial which Is printed
In The Atlanta Spirit of the lBth Inst.
The head lines of the editorial state
that "A few ministers are seeking to
force drug stores to close on Sunday*,
etc.”
We wish to affirm that this statement
Is not true.
The sub-committee of the ministers’
sssoclatlon, whose names are signed to
this card, represent an • association
composed of seventy-live pastors and
other ministers of the city and that
thpse seventy-five ministers represent
nearly all of the larger and more prom
inent churches of Atlanta; and that
the action taken by the association in
regard to the matter of closing ’ the
drug stores on Sunday was unanimous.
The chnrge, therefore, that a "few"
ministers are behind this movement. Is
not true. . .
The other false charge In the edito
rial Is that a few' ministers al-e seek
ing to “force” proprietors of drug stores
to close on Sundays.
In reply to this unfair and false
charge we affirm that the ministers’ as
sociation Is not attempting to force
drug stores to close on Sundays, nor
does the association propose to prose
cute those parties, nor have any threats
of prosecution been made.
The facts In the case are that the
state of Georgia Is the prosecutor and
the ministers’ association has simply
made a respectful request that those
places of business now violating the
state law voluntarily agree to close
their places of business on Sundays so
ss to prevent prosecution.
A large number of the most proml
nent drug: .concerns | n the city .have
cheerfully!;sighed m|rf agreement’to
close on Sundays and In : some cases
the proprietors of these houses have
called up our committee over the tele
phone and have requestd their names
to bo added to the list. Mafiy of these
men are among the best citizens of
Atlanta and they are not the men to be
forced or bulldozed Into this thing.
Out of the large number of drug store
proprietors approached by the commit
tee onlyvtwo of them declined to enter
Into the agreement. A number of the
clerks of these place of business above
refererd to, and In some Instances the
proprietors themselves, have from
time to time appealed to the Sabbath
observance committee to take the very
action which the ministers’ association
has taken, looking to the relief of a
large number of men who' are forced
to work on the Sabbath day In viola
tion of a Jaw tfhlch Js bofh natural and'
The charge in the editorial Intimat
ing that the ministers are seeking to
force their religious ylews upon the
drug merchants and others, or that
they are working to Increase their con
gregations by requesting those men to
close their places of business on the
Sabbath day Is another false charge.
Nothing is said about the church and
not a man has been asked to close his
store or cigar stand In order that he
may attend any church. The matter
of church attendance has never been
once mentioned aa a reason for clos
ing. Tha hundreds of men who are en
gaged In this unnecessary and unlaw
ful work on the Sabbath day, need that
day tor rest and they are entitled to It
whether they attend church or not.
The ministers’ association Is making
no light In Its present effort, from the
standpoint of religion, but from a hu

^ ec - 22.—It became
known:just before the opening of court
this morning that John Tonnlng, the
2?,'""'"a boatman of the Bayslde Yacht
h;M been located by T. Jenkins
Halds lawyer, and will certainly be a
witness for tho defense. It was Tun
ning who. it Is said, knocked the pistol
from _ Captain Halns’ hand Just after
tne snooting, and he was the one cool
man on the float at the time. He of all
others can tell Just what occurred and
what he says will have the most Im
portant bearing upon the damaging
testimony given by Mrs. Annis.
The testimony given by Mrs. Helene
Annis, widow of the victim of the army
officers revolver, was a body blow to
the defense. This testimony came with
such directness that it staggered the
defense and drove the blood from the
face of the defendant. All along Mr.
McIntyre has dreaded tho testimony of
Mrs. Annis. He did not know what
she would tell which would pave the
way for the state to prove that Thom-
ton Halns had Influenced his brother
to do murder, but not for a minute kail
. anticipated the damaging lengths to
which Mrs. Annis would go.’
Counsel for the defense received re
ports that Mrs. Claudia L. Halns, wife
of Captain Peter C. Halns, was today
within call nmj would appear there to
take the witness stand whenever de
sired,
The lawyers for Jenkins Halns de
clared they had every reason to believe
that District Attorney Darrin had sum
moned. Ml*.'Halns from her home In
Wlnthrop, Mass., and that she was liv
ing In Brooklyn during; the progress of
the trial of her brother-in-law.
