New Orleans, March 16.—Awakened
by a noise In her bedroom, Mrs. D. J.
Adams, wife of the mayor of Pass
Christian, Mias., frustrated an at
tempted aasasslnation of her husband
early this morning. Standing at the
bedside with uplifted hands In one of
which was held a dagger and in the
other an Iron bar, Mrs. Adams, saw a
man who threatened her husband’s life
and she screamed. Becoming fright
ened, the intruder made his escape
from the building.
Mrs. Adams believes the would-be
assassin ‘was a white man who ap
peared to be disguised as a negro, and
It is suspected he had a companion whp
remained outside of the building. Two
suspects are being looked for and their
descriptions have been telegraphed to
all points. x
Mayor Adams has been active In a
crusade against law-breakers and It Is
believed that a revengeful attack on
him was planned.
Feeling at Pass Christian Is running
high and people are anxious for the
apprehension of. the culprits.

New Orleans, March 16.—Our market ___

unexpectedly. A few tired longs started to

New crops wera steady and opened at un
changed prices. While ,the market in its
I reaent disorganised state, and under in-
uences checking activity, may give way some
jore, the prevailing range of prices offers no
inducement to take tha bear, side and seema
to preclude a’.l hope of any lasting gain by
selling. Basic conditions and the most im
portant items of prospects are strongly in
favor of an ultimate advance, and It looks
as if occasional depressions could best be
used along this line. No precipitation oc
curred in th# belt during the past twenty-
four hours, except a few light showers in
eastern Florida. The upper two-thirds of
the belt bad heavy to killing frosts. Indi
cations are for stationary conditions, except
slowly rising temperatures. According to as
tailed reports in the Texas press, preelplta
tion over the week-end was fairly ample, ex
cept in tbe southwestern qparter of the state.
Spots are dull and neglected. Th* demand so
far this month has not been what was ex
pected of March. Spots today are about
l-16c lowar to sell, but there is not touch
offering at the decline. Futures are quiet
end steady at present, but there te no ef«
ficient support and much depends on whethfr
or not long hold on. The market right now
could not stand any liquidation by old lonp.

mor# bearish than generally
There was nothing particularly bearish in
the news snd the Mton sold seemed to go

There are known to he a large number of
investors who have been waiting for a set
back to buy cotton, considering it reasonable
at this level in comparison with th* high
quotations of previous years and th# high
prices of other commodities. This element
was In evidence today and will doubtless be
