more of the necessity for klnd-
ness to animals than I do of tbe
necessity for kindness to children and
people.
This Is my explanation;
Character Is built In layers, like the
earth. The very first foundation of i
noble character Is kindness. All othf-r
virtues and talents are like hous-s
built upon the ahlftlng -and If kind
ness Is not at the base.
The word •kindness” has become al
most meaningless by Its misapplica
tion.
Thousands of Christian people be
lieve themselves “kind" when thev Ki\e
money to charitable Institution- and
speak to those they deem inferiors -
with condescending amiability.
They rear their children to be -kind.”
but they do not explain to the unfolding
young mind how kindness Includes an
understanding of the great responsibil
ity the strong owe to the weak, the ro
bust to the ailing, the well-to-do to
the poor, the complete to the deformed,
the speech-endowed to the dumb.
A Way to Banilh Suffering.
If every child living today were made
to realize this sense of responsibility,
nnd to feel sympathy, protection and
love for the helpless animals, the de-
fortfied, sick or penniless humans, more
than two-thirds of the. sorrow, suffer
ing and sin on earth would vanish in
one generation.
The Idea of “kindness" has l»-n
talked in an abstract manner from the
pulpits of the world for centuries. The
word has grown Inane, like “brotherly
love" nnd "Christianity."
Children hear kindness urged at Sun
day school and public school, yet they
go out upon the street and tease nd
ridicule some wretched beggar or for
lorn peddler or tramp, nnd they “«e;“
the dog on the tall of the cat and laugh
at the result.
These same children of Christian
parents, pupils of Christian teachers
nnd members of Christian churclic-.
drive behind horses will* docked tails
ami are not taught to know that the
docking process is mutilation of a por
tion of the animal's spinal column, nnd
that the poor beast has been deprived
of hi* means of defense against Insects.
The Starting Point of Character.
These children consider the over
check a “stylish” affair, nnd they nrs
not taught that It means torture to the
animal.
Thla sort of civilization and educa
tion-called Christian—lesvee the por
tion of the brain where kindness dwell*
wholly undeveloped. The child who
has no sense of duty toward an ani
mal has a lesa active sense of duty
toward a fellow being.
It Is because I know the Importance
of a solid foundation for any strip tttr$
which we hope will last that I so con
stantly advocate laying the inacon work
of kindness to animals as the starting
point for a useful character.
I do not believe any little girl, how
ever unfortunate In her environment,
will grow Into a careless, unloving nr
cruel mother If ehe Is taught to ln\e,
protect and care for the birds, cats,
dogs nnd horses she sees ns she grows
toward womanhood.
I do-not believe the boy who Is awak
ened to a knowledge of his responsi
bility tbward animals will grow up t >
tease or torment cripples or tramps nr
to misuse his own kindred.
No Room for Petty Jealousy.
It Is an excellent thing for the world
at large that so many societies are be
ing formed everywhere to educate chil
dren and adults In klndnes*. The more
of thesa societies the better. But It Is
saddening to observe tbe petty spirit of i
Jealousy often existing between two
societies formed for the same purp> se.
but bearing different names.
The American Humane Asaoclallon Is
a noble and admirable society, an or
ganized federation of humane societies
end Individuals having for Us object
the prevention and suppression of cru
elty. and czpedatly of cruelty to chil
dren and animals.
Its work Is excellent, nnd every mem
ber of the S. P. C. A. should rejoice In
the formation of the Humane Associa
tion. and every member of the Humane
Association shuuld wish godspeed to
the 8. P. <’,A.
.Instead I llnd rivalry and Jealousy
and backbiting existing In many places
between the two societies, and I urn
ashamed of human nature when it i an
drug down a noble cause by such un
worthy feelings.
All Should Work Together.
They handicap and hinder the prog-
** of klndner* In the world.
If you are a member of either »<u l. ty
remember you nro merely a finger »n
God’s hand. Do not feel Jealousy or
rivalry toward nny other linger, hut
think of yourself a* a part of tbe great
whole—Incapable alone, but helping to
give power and completeness to the
other members of the supreme body.
When the moturmnn's hand reached
down and drew up the child from the
track no one Anger of that hand cried
out against the otheis which united In
making Its strength.
Do your work In your own best w
and wish godspeed to all fellow woi
era.
