vided sharply over«the question of a

George F. Baer proposed drastic ac
tion toward the miners. A 10 per cent
reduction In wages was proposed, but
Baer and his faction were overruled. *
. The official version of the meeting
given to the reporters was to the effect
that all was harmony, but It 1 Is known
that such was not the case.
Threats of a wage reduction and a
general lockout were made during the
meeting of the heads of the coal trust;
but, after a hot wrangle, a compromise
was made. the.warring faction agreeing
to the appointment of a sub-committee
to Investigate conditions and heport In
a week.

Pittsburg, April 13—In the belief
that Edward Joyce, superintendent*of

mine yesterday and declured they heard
faint tappings, but could not locate

Judge Landis Scales Down
On Fines.
Chicago, April 13—Henry J. Tib
betts, a well-known publisher and vet
eran of the Civil war, was fined 1 cent
by Judge Landis on a charge of making
a false affidavit for a fellow soldier of
the Civil war to aid th? comrade In the
collection of his pension. Tibbetts la 71
years old and his offense ,waa of a

Macon, Ga., April 13.—Member* of
the chamber of commerce are making
plana to take up their fight against
the feet system again, and the matter
will probably be put into shape for
the May meeting of the body, so that
any discussion with the local members
of the legislature may.be taken up.
As far as can be learned, some mem
bers of the body will urge that the
legislature be asked to pass such a
law as will give the county an op
portunity to Improve the present aye
tem of paying the county officers.
It Is believed by those who have had
the question under discussion that
320,009 to 330,000 can be saved In the
wise administration of affairs with
change.

P. Holland. Inventor of submarine craft,
has derided to sell to Japan the rights
to his latest perfected submarine which
has many Improvements. He says the
first opportunity to obtain the free and
exclusive use of the new design was
given to the United States navy, but
the department refused to take It and
now he Is negotiating with Japan to

Jasper Howell, ot Atlanta, preached at
the morning und evening services at

The church has not vet chosen a suc
cessor to Dr. M. Ashby Jones, but the

Wrightsviile, Gs., April 13.—Miles
Braddy, an aged negro, was arrested
Saturday by 8. J. Moya, city court
sheriff, and lodged In the county Jail
on the charge of distilling and selling
whisky. The still waa In his kitchen
and was running when the arrest was
made. Braddy was bold In his defi
ance of the law, as the still was only
about 100 yards from one of tile main
residence streets of Wrightsviile.
