INQUEST WRITES “FINIS”
AT CLOSING CHAPTER OF
MRS. MONNISH’S CAREER
It Was Irony of Fate
Whigh Led to
Her Death.
Dead by her own hand, (he body of
Mr*. Rosa F. Monnlsh lay In the tin
tlertnklng room* of Greenberg, Bond A
Bloomfield Tuesday morning before the
coroner's Jury that passed Judgment on
the final act of her long and tumultu
ous life, her suicide by poison.
During the Investigation came out
the story of her sentence Monday in
the Federal court, when Judge W. T.
Neivman fixed her penalty at two years
and two day* Imprisonment In the
Lansing, Kan*., penitentiary and a line
of lf.000 for Improper uae of the
Vnlted States malls. The conviction
of Mrs. Monnlsh on two counts of the
original Indictment came after a hard-
fought legal engagement, In which some
of the best talent In Atlanta was en
listed In her behalf.
The letters, the sending of which she
Ass convicted, were with reference to
Carrie Lou Byrd Montgomery Preston,
of Knoxville, at that time the wife of
tv. M. Preston, and dealt with the al
leged relation* of Mrs. Monnlsh’* hus
band. Dr. W. A. Monnlsh, and the
woman, while the latter was a resident
of Atlanta, and. for a nerlod, an Inmate
of the Monnlsh home” A suit for di
vorce had’already been filed by Mrs.
Monnlsh against her husband, naming
this woman as corespondent, and the
letters’to Preston appear to have been
the attempt of a jealous woman to In
form the husband of her rival of the
character of his bride, as she appeared
to Mrs. Monnlsh.
Then began the drama that, with
sure and rapid steps, led to the tragic
denouement of the Federal court sen
tence and the suicide.
Again and again, during the score
and more of years that Mrs. Monnlsh
has conducted her medical practice In
Atlanta, objections had been raised and
cases had been started bv those who
believed her practice to be outside the
pale of society and of law. Again and
again, thru lark of evidence, the cases
were abandoned, the objections came to
' naught. Safe In her Peachtree-*!, es
tablishment. she opposed an unshaken
front to Inquiry, before which broke
down the rumors that once and again
besieged her and her work.
And then, by her own hand, she
sprung the bolt that unleashed destiny.
Maddened by what she alleged to be
the Infidelity of her husband nnd the
Impudent triumph of her rival In hi* af
fections. she yielded to the Impulse that
suggested revenge upon her enemy by
the exposure of her past career to her
present husband. More, seemingly In
toxicated with the mad desire for
sweeping vengeance, she appear* to
have flooded the friends, relatives and
acquaintances of Carrie Lou Montgom
ery Preston with terrible arraignments
of her character, couched In language
passing belief.
Unci* Sam Steps In.
Then came the work of the poatoffire
Inspector, followed by the stoppage of
her mall on a fraud order from Wash
ington based on the false representa
tions of her newspaper advertising. But
It was on the evidence of the terrible
letters concerning her rival that Mrs.
Mannish's Indictment was secured be
fore the Federal grand Jury In January,
and It was upder the sentence result
ing from that trial thdt she took her life
Monday afternoon. Untouched by tile
efforts to dlsrloss and break up her
practice, she herself armed the govern
ment with weapons that brought her
to bay at last.
End of the Drsm*.
Swiftly followed her trial and con
viction. The efforta of her attorneys
were then bent to securing the penalty
of a fine only, and by their advice she
sold her establishment and alt her At
lanta property and prepared for the
,Btovs from the city they told her was
necessary. Bui In the opinion of Judge
Newman the offense of which she had
been convicted was too flagrant to be
dismissed with a fine, and, like a thun
derbolt. came the sentence of Impris
onment as well.
Under guard of a Federal deputy,
soon after reaching her* home, Mrs,
Monnlsh. after retiring to her cham
ber, sent away her attendant, request
ing that writing materials be brought
her. Five minutes later she was found
by MIss.McColgan. returning, lying on
the floor In a dying condltlpn, by her
side an open bottle of diluted prussic
acid. Medlcan assistance was sum
moned, Dr. Virgil Cook responding, but
the terrible poison had done its work.
It was the end.
Her little daughter, Jeanette, was
hysterical with grief, tho she seemed
not to realise the full significance of
what had befallen her. Over and over
again In the marshal's office at the
Federal building Monday, she had
said: "l will not stay with that man
(Dr, Monnlsh'!: I have friends to whom
I will go first.”
Her Little Daughter.
What will be the future of the little
girl? Mrs. Monnlsh Is survived by two
brother* only. Bun and Lewis Freuden-
Ihal, of whom thWfnrmer Is a paAlytlc.
living In New York and said to have
been supported for some time by Mrs.
Monnlsh.
Dr. W. A. Monnlsh stated Tuesday
morning that all arrangements, so far
as he wae concerned, would be attend
ed to by his brother. F. W. Monnlsh.
of Tuscaloosa, Ala., whom he expected
In Atlanta shortly. Mrs. Monnlsh left
a will, drawn by Cox, Cox A Cox r of
Atlanta, which I* now In charge of
Jofin W. Cox. Mr. Cox stated It would
be duly filed In the court of ordinary
Borne time Tuesday or Wednesday.
Up to noon Tuesday no fixed ar
rangements for the funeral had been
made. It was understood that neither
of Mrs. Monnlsh’* brothers would at

expected.

Offset by Reported Rain in
Texas—Advanced Sharp
ly on Heavy Buying.
RANGE OF NEW YORK STOCKS AND COTTON MARKETS
(BY PRIVATE LEASED WIRE.I
NAME OF STOCK.
Sew York, April 20.—In the heal cotton
market this morning better cables from Llv*
erpool than had been expected were offset by
reports of rail® in the southwest, and after
opening steady at an advance of 1 point to
a decline of 1 point the list acted rather
weak, and pricea eased off to a little under
yesterday's close. There was further Belling
by the interests which figured so prominently
on that aide of the account yesterday, but
they also bought soma positions, and it ap
peared as If it was a r««# of scattered liquida
tion more than of operations for the large
traders.
On rather heavy liquidation, some bear
selling and reported rains in Texas the market
sold off from opening quotations some 18 to
17 points during the early morning session.
At the low points heavy buying orders made
their appearance and prices advanced easily
to about opening figures at noon. The Texas
rains were very v -llfht, and in most casea
amounted to only n trace. . .
The buying movement which started around
e noon hour increased as the session ad
vanced. Liverpool was a heavy buyer, and
the trade generally followed its lead. The
result was sharp, decisive advance in all
options to the highest point of the season,
from which there was a recession on a wave
of profit-taking in the leaf ten minutes of
trading. The close, however, was steady net
1SJ0 21 points above'Monday's finals.

DAILY COTTON LETTRR
New Orleans, April 20.—The political situ-
At ion in Kuvope is evidently considered satis*
factory in leading circles, as standard govern
mint securities show a further advance this
morning. Liverpool showed much' independent
strength and did not follow yesterday** de
cline on our aide. The 2 o’clock quotations
showed futures about 5 points better than
due; spot prices 7 lower; an adjustment to
yesterday's dip in futures. Sales were 10.000
bales. Our own correspondents cable: 'The
trade In Manchester la undoubtedly bftter

red in Arkansas. Indication* point to eon
tinued cloudy; possibly some more sprinkles,
but no general relief from drouth ia indicated.
Cloudy, showery weather will predominate in
the central and eastern belt and there ma-
be heavier rains in the north evatral an«
northeastern portion. As so many bulls have
sold out and would like to gel in cheaper,
hears meet with little opposition in getting
some sentimental depression from the sprin
kles In the west. But. in the end, tacts
count, and these are that new crop conditions
in the upper two-thirds of Texas are still very
unsatisfactory on the 20»h day of April. It
is also doubtful whether the wet spell Indi
cated for the central and eastern belt wtll
further the chances for early new supplies.
Little Rock report* about 4,500 balea lost by
fire this morning. Spots are firm and there
ia more general demand today.
Naw York, April 20.—The only rainfall in
Texas the past 24 hours was light showers
ranging from a trace to about % inch at
about six or eight scattered localities. 'Thia
was hardly enough moisture to more than
settle the dust. As the weather bureau today
indicated absence of general rains in the state
and Liverpool markets showed lass reaction in
response to the heary profit taking here yes
terday bullish activity was resumed shortly
after the opening of the market today. The
way the market took the enormous profit-
taking sales of yesterday from the big Chi
cago and local and New Orleans operators
with only the model reaction of ten to fifteen
points impressed the trade today and caused
many who had been playing for the top to
cover their shorts and go long again for
turn. It ia realized that as long as t
drought in Texas continues unbroken that
nothing more than slight and temporary re
actions are likely to occur. Consequently
this situation is still regirded as the most
potent fattor continuing to stimulate bullish
sentiment. Therefore, the market is likely to
work higher in a gradual way until the
drouth feature ha* been eliminated by good
rains alt over Texas.
The market opened irregular and slumped
_ to 4 points with May going down to 10.25,
July 10.28. October 10.11 and December
10.10. This, however, was quickly recovered
and befdre the end of the forenoon replaced
with an advance of 11 to 15 over yesterday’s,
with Mav going up to 10.42. July 10.45, Oc
tober 10.26 and December 10.23.
There was very heavy profit-taking by old
bulls during afternoon, but the market ab
sorbed these offerings very well and main-'
tainvd a continued good undertone of strength
up to the cloae.

ern Pafifle apd New York Central are still re
garded’ as in line for considerably higher
prices. While advices are quite bullish on
Union Pacific and Southern Pacific, some dis
crimination, as reported yesterday, is evident
toward these particular stocks, hut why this
ia so it is not yet clear. Good buying i*
going on In Missouri Pacific. Wabash issue*
and Denver. Rock Island shares, Kansas
City Southern. Missouri, Kansas and Texas
and Hawley juniors generally are favored on
ail recessions. Chesapetka and Ohio is ex
pected to resume Its advance at any time.
Krie and Southern railway issues are a|«o
said to be In line for better prices.
Advices are still favorable to buying
United States Steel. Amalgamated Copper,
American Smelters and Anaconda
commission houses and also the Patten homes.
Fair support developed on the decline and
the market rallied, helped by the atrength.in
corn. *
There waa a wild time In the wheat mar
ket. with price changes sensational in char
acter. The May sold off sharply and the scat
tered longs, believing that the deal in that
month had culminated, threw overboard mil
lions ot bushels of the July and September.
The break carried the longs off their feet for
the time being, but a shar^ rally followed the
wicked break. Final figures showed losses of
2<ri3%c in wheat. %<jT%e in corn, %@%c
in oata and 2%<$15c in provisiona.
