Mr. Hill determined to commit sui

a plan that would give It'the appear

be used as a circumstance to show that
ha had been murdered. He knew that
there had been much litigation between
the Dodges and a number of citizens In
Telfair and adjoining counties, about
land titles, and. being an attorney for
the Dodge estate, he thought the best
place ‘to cover up the rash act and
create the suspicion and theory of mur

McRae. Accordingly, he came to Me
Rae on Sunday, the 4th Inst., and was
soon In conversation with Mr. T. J.
Curry, a local representative of the
Dodge company. He stated to. Mr.
Curry that he did not feel aa easy as h*e
generally did i. that he had received two

next day wna alno found. He Upped

removed a half-gallon bucket of water
front the atove. the content, of which
was on the-floor. He crushed rf-tflre

wooden bar, which woe.removed from
the rear door and placed near where

To account for the few drops of

the blood on hi, left arm above the
wrist and on hi, shirt under hi, vent, on
the suicide theory, he must have drawn
the blood front hi, own person. In some

fore he shot him, elf. He then washed
hi, hand,, let the water out nf the baaln
and refllled It with water without blood,
wiping hi, hand, on the towel, which
was found damp, and laid aero,, hi,
ovsreoat, umbrella and glove, on n
table across the room. Carrying out
the suggestion of murd,r, he tore hi,

wrist. With electric light, burning, he
took hi, position on th, floor where the
dead body was found, hi, fset touching
the desk, which concealed him from
view thru the large rear window,, nnd
concealed hlmwtf from view thru the
front window, by the partition which
divided the ofllce.
With the pistol In hi, right hand and

the deadly weapon, fell gracefully

When found hi, skull wa, crocked
and the seam, open.
Wan It cracked by the bullet and
opened as hi, head hit the floor?
I, the suicide theory reasonable? Had
he received the threatening letter,,
would he not have shown them to hie
taw partn,rs and jealously guarded
them and the envelopes In which they
came? —
Why Did He Come?
With such forewarnings nnd fore,
■dings, would he have come to McR*e
unless duty compelled him?
If apprehensive of assassination, why
did he not arm himself before leaving
Macon?
In declining Mr. Curry", plstol. wa. It
not to .,ava his friend from suspicion,
knowing that If found dead In Mr. Cur
ry's office with his pistol the circum
stances would embarrass him?
If Mr. Hill was so uneasy and appre
hensive of danger, why did he not en-,
gage n room at the hotel and db hi*
work there?
Or. If he was bent on doing night
ork In th# Dodge office, why did he
not take at least one friend with him?
Or. If he would go alone, why not leave
the front and rear door, fastened ami
not expose himself to the danger I
much drr&ded?
Why did he work at a desk In full
view of two large window, opening on
an alley. If he wna afraid?
Blnce the Federal courts settled the
question of titles to the lands In dis
pute between the Dodge coffipany and
people in this ssctlon years ago. what
motive could have prompted any one to
assaaelnate Mr. Hill? If the Dodge
company's ' local representatives and
local.couusel are honored and respected
cltlsens of Telfair and aa safe In life
and property as othar*. why should Mr.
Hill have been In danger of assassina
tion?.
Is It not the fact-that no such paper
as that upon which the nnnnymoua let

gestive that .the letter .was written else
where?
Would the murderers of Mr. Hill have
taken time to lay him out before mak
fng their exit?
If shot while standing, would he havi
fallen |n the position found—with hli
feet touching the desk? • .
Would it have occurred to an asias

believe that he would have left th#

If the chairs had been knocked over

ble that one would have been left on

Was Mr. Hill involved In any finan
cial or' other troubles that might drive
him to desperation and despair?
Was he always bright and cheerful,
or; was he given to morosenes, and
melancholy?
What significance ha, the failure o(
the governor to offer a'reward for the
assassins of Pope Hill?
These and many other questions are
being asked. They might be multiplied
Into a volume.
It Is ssked that If Mr. Hill wanted to
commit suicide, why should he take so
much pains In laying hi, plot and how
could he consent to put such a suspi
cion and stigma upon thh Innocent snd
law-abiding citlxens of McRae and Tel
fair nounty? *
No man In Georgia Is more highly
respected than Colonel Nat. Harris, of
Macon.
As Mr. Hill's close friend and busi
ness associate he feels a peculiar Inter,
est In the Investigation of this horrible
tragedy. 'If th# evidence adduced cre
ate, a reasonable doubt In his mind on
the murder theory, and points to sui
cide. Mr. Harris has th* mahlinesa and
honor to an express himself and will do
all In hi* power |o rtmove the stigma
which the suspicion of murder has put
upon ths community.
No doubt Mr,. Hill, who hts tha sym
pathy of the whole state, prefer, that
the truth be known, and. If Mr. Hill
committed suicide, *« painful *, the
fact may he to her, she prefers Its pub
licity rather than have cltlsens of Tel
fair county misjudged and misrepre
sented.
A charitable' public must not attach
too much Importance to the verdict of,
the coroner’, June When It was writ
ten the whole community was' stirred
as probablr never before.
If wrllten 'today It might not charge

It might declare that he was killed
