VOTAN
"VOTAN” was the god of the Maya*—a race Inhabiting the peninsula
of Yucatan and vicinity. It has been estimated that they numbered at the
time of the Spanish conquest about ttvo million soul*.
The Spaniards found a very highly developed civilisation—In fact, the
highest civilisation of all ancient America.
Scientists have found that the Mnyn tongue resembled the Kgyptlan. In
their own writings they claim their ancestors came from a distant region In
the east. It Is said that their mode of writing was distinctly phonetic.
"VOTAN" was the Mayas' culture hero. The Maya Indians claim that
"VOTAN” wo* sent by God to divide nnd assign the different races of men
on earth and to'give-each their own language.
The land to which he enme was called the land of "VOTAN." Legend
further tells us that before hls arrival the Mayas were Ignorant barbarians,
without fixed habitation. Their writing* claim that "VOTAN" gave them
their civilisation.
“VOTAN" was worshiped by the Mayas as tbelr principal deity and their
patron.
The Maya* do not believe that "VOTAN" died as ordinary mortals do.
but iienetrated thru a cave Into the under earth and found hls way to
heaven.
The name "VOTAN” I* derived from a pure Maya root word which
means primarily the heart and breast. So you see to them "VOTAN" must
have been all worshipful. *
He Is supposed to have supervised the building of many of the ancient
cities of Yncatan, of course, long since destroyed, the ruins of which wen-
discovered many years ago, and In many places in Yucatan there are large
underground caves, which are supposed by the people of that country to
have contained temples bod! by "VOTAN" and hla followers.
