ON THE GAME
Barif Scored on Double Play
That Retired Side and
Sentell Kicked.
Mobile, Ala., Aug. 27.-—If the Atlanta
players had made exactly one run less
than they did here yesterday afternoon
they would have had a protested game
on their hands.
It happened In the 'natural course of
events that Atlanta made three runs
to Mobile's one. As the Mobile protest
was only against one of the runs and as
the throwing out of that run would
have made no earthly difference In the
winning of the game, the protest was
withdrawn and the Incident closed.
Here is the play over which the ques
tion arose. It came off In the seventh.
Barr bunted as an Inning-opener and
was off In a whirl for first.- Ludwig,
who fielded the ball, saw the need of
hurry and pegged with much speed and
little accuracy for first. The ball went
wild and Barr continued to secqnd.
Walker got away with a single and Barr
advanced still another base. Rogers ran
for Walker. Atkins hit a liner apd bn
It there was no advance., Baylcss filed
out to Wheat, and Rogers, who was on
first, supposed that the ball was going
fair and acted accordingly, tearing out
for second. Just whether Barr thought
the same thing and cut tight out for
home, or whether He waited until the
ball was caught and then beat It for the
plate. Is shrouded In .mystery.
Anyhow. Wheat surprised everybody
by catching Bay less’ fly. Rogers was
especially surprised, and somewhat
pained, by the discovery and was
doubled off first. But before he
put out Barr scored.
Umpire Augle Moron announced* that
the run would count. Sentell. for the
Gulls, couldn’t, see It. and protested
with great violence. Moran would not
change his decision and tho run fctood.
But Sentell filed a vltrollc protest. „
On the face of it Sentell seems tu
have beetv right. However, the ques
tion Is onf offburely academic Interest,
for Sentell withdrew' his protest when
he saw that the one run ciit little figure
anyhow*.

Columbia Wants >
Only Six Clubs
Auguita, Ga., Aug. 27.—President
William Banks. 6f Ihe, Columbia club,
who 1s here today, attending the
Bally league meeting, makes a state
ment that the Columbia owners ups
unalterably opposed to a continuance
•f the present eight-club arrangement
next' season. 1 ’Furthermore. Columbia’s
franchise Is for sale at & price that will
bay the club's debts.
"We don’t want Chattanooga or Co
lumbia again,’’.declared ilr. Banks, “fob
two reason: nrst, they have:no respect
for the salary limit, and thereby ,et
a pace too fast for the other town,;
and, second, the distances are too great
with them In the circuit for the league
to survive another sea,on.”
Mr. Banks states that Columbia will
try again, even tho her protest Is voted
down,, but the owners fully 'expect to
fall and for that reason the franchise Is
for said at cost.
