What a Georgian Reader
Has to Say
The Atlanta Georgian and New., City:
Dear Sir—I am very much Interested In the articles you publish on
poultry, and as I am a poultry breeder, would like to have a little chicken
talk with you. Our family la not large, but we all like chicken, anil egga,
too, so naturally I breed the large kind, also the kind that lay,
I have quite a number of vlaltors to my poultry yard* and enjoy show
ing my birds and answering their questions. About the first thing a vis
itor notices Is how large the birds are. and often asks if It does not take a
great amount of food for them. Right her. let me apeak a few word, in
defense of quantity of food required for large breeds. They are not nervous
bird, and are thoroughly contented In small or large yards. A four-foot
fence Is more than sufficient to keep them In. Give them good, dry and
clean roosting quarters and sheds outside, with plenty of clean dust for their
dust batha, and clean, fresh drinking water, and you hate half the feed
bills paid. Take, on the other hand, the lighter breeds. Almost any of
them will fly over the highest fence. They aro on the run all day. In neigh
bors’ gardens and front yards, trying to find something new to destroy,
and when night comes they go home run down, tired and hungry aa
wolves. Do they eat? Well, yea. If you feed them.
When one Is breeding the large kind, he knows where to And his birds
at any time and where to look for the egga. and. If they are like mine, he
will always And eggs. Being gentle birds, they are not on the run all day
and It takes less to keep them In good, healthy laying order than the light
er ones.
' I have hens weighing from nine to twelve pounds. They are very gentle
and a pleasure as well aa proflt to work with. My egg record for the
month of January showa 201 eggs from 10 of my hens. Now, that Is what
I call “dandy laying.”
What kind do 1 breed? Why, the Single-Comb Buff Orpingtons, of
course. Yours very truly, M. A. NORRIS.
