Th© Abb© Spallanzani was th© first
scientist to study systematically the
chemical powers of th$ gastric Juice,
hut It was by the cureful and convinc
ing experiments of Beaumont that th©
foundation of our exact knowledge of
it* composition and action was laid.
Beaumont was an army surgeon, lo
cated at an obscure military post In
Michigan, w hile it was yet a territory,
and was called upon to treat a gun shot
wound of th© stomach In a Canadian
voyageur—Alexis 8t. Martin. When
the wound healed a permanent opening
was left by mean* of which food could
lie placed in the stomach and gastric
Jutve taken from It.
Beaumont made scientific experi
ments w ith his crude means and wrote
a book, which today Is recognized
among the classics of physiology.
Beaumont blazed the way for other
scientists so that today medicine know*
what the stomach does with food and
what food does to the stomach.
Science also know* what the gastric
juices are and |iow to mukc them best
for th© system. t
