NEXT WEEK AT THE THEATERS
What About
Your Wile?
rilR ATLANTA GEORGIAN AND NE^S: SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 1910.
Great Offering Requires Com
pany of 150, 11 Scenes
and 1,000 Costumes.
There I* a big idea bank of "Little
N'emo," the Klaw & Erlangor attrac
tion which will bo seen at tho Grand all
next week, with matinee* Wednesday
Saturday and a special matins Tues
day, Washington’s birthdri . mid that
idea Is patriotism—pati lot 1 /\ which
appeals t«> the child, the \««uih, the
matron and the grandmotlMT. It ex
udes from every *»oro of this big pla.v
which Klaw A Krlanger modestly
t»*rm merely a musical comedy. It Is
more than that-It Is the spirit of '76
garnished with the beauty and color
and gorgeousness of song and dance
and mush* of 190H. If you want to In
still patriotism into your little boy or
girl; if the youth In your family has
grown Indifferent to his country’s needs
and exceptions; If the father and moth
er themselves have found the spirit be
coming dormant. Just gather your fam
ily up and go to the Grand and you
will get a patriotic stirring up such as
no year in school or college or any sea
son of lectures could Inspire In you.
and remember that It is nil dono In the
moat fascinating, tuneful way.
In "Little Nemo" Harry B. Nmith
seems to have caught this same In
spiration and ha* written his best book,
arid Victor Herbert, generally conceded
to be our best composer, has found
Inspiration for the greatest variety and
most stirring examples of his musical
genius. Nothing has been heard in a
theater In tills decade, it is said, to
equal In stirring qualities the three
numbers which follow' each other in
rapid succession at the end of the sec
ond act and the beginning of the third.
This has reference to "The Old <*on-
ilnentulssung by a full chorus; "The
Liberty r’lilmcs," with accompaniment
of bells, and a lousing naval song, en
titled "Give I s a Fleet." But "Little
Nemo” fs so full of musical good things
that It is hard to discriminate.
The men behind the guns In this
wonderful achievement, which requires
eleven scenes and more thun one thou
sand carefully designed costumes to
properly set forth the story, are Messrs.
Klaw and Erlunger, who have long
been conceded the premier producers
of stage attractions In this country, and
when that Is said, it means the world.
becauHe neither London, Paris. Berlin
nor Vienna can ever attempt to equal
In elaborateness of production and at
tention to detail the perfection reached
in this country. These men have been
responsible for more big successful
stage productions than all other man
agers of this generation combined.
Even to the selection of the company,

THREE FUNNY ONES.
Character in “Batty in Dreamland," epectacular musical comedietta at the Orpheum next week.
"Little Nemo" la a work of great skill,
which la only another term for a work
of art.
Tlie fun In "Little Nemo” in clean
uml wholesome, and there Ih plenty of
it. The play Ih a realisation of the
ideal of the artist who created this
character. The Rlttle PrtncoKH Fairy
Valentine. Weather Vane, Candy Kid,
Little Hetty and the othera involved In
the youthful scenes are convincing,
boys and girls, and you expect to hear
them Ring "I Waht to Bo a Naughty
Littln Girl," "The Happy J.und of Once
Upon a Time,” "Will You Be My
Playmate'.'" "Huppy Cumberland,” and
when they do sing them you are not
looking for the efforts of a great so
prano, of world-famous tenors, be
cause they do not exist among boys and
girls.
Victor Herbert, knowing this, has
written the most charming, tuneful
melodies with a marvelous witchery of
orchestration for Ills strings and reedr
to tit Just such voices; and Harry B.
Smith, catching the Inspiration'of the
composer, has written lyrics which will
be hummed and sung before nearly
every hearthstone in the land. But do
not glean from this that when the
occasion demands there la not some
big choral work done. In contrast to
the songs above mentioned, full of the
Inspiration of youth, there are the
chimes, which mark the nnale of the
second act. Sung as It Is by a magnifi
cent chorus, with a background of the
cIrsnIc picture of the signing of the
Declaration nf Independence and the
electric display of the Fourth of July
celebration, it stirs the pulse of the
most phlegmatic. •
As for the production, so fur as scen
ery'. costumes and mechanical equip
ment go, skill and good taste are evi
dent everywhere, and Klaw & Urlanger
have once more shown themselves en
titled to the laurel wreath In giving to
America this splendid series of stags
pictures.
THE FATAL WEDDING
COMES TO THE LYRIC
If you want to have the time of your
life, go to the Lyric theater any even
ing or matinee during the week com
mencing Monday next and witness
Klimt & Gaxsolo's production of the
greatest of nil modern melodramas, en
titled "The Fatal Wedding."
"You've seen It before?" Of course
you ha'A'. but never with such a cast
and production as this one, mid If you
miss It you'll be sorry'. Nearly every
one has seen It, and that's what makes
it one ef the most valuable pieces of
property in stngn life, and that’s what
makes all those who have seen it want
to go again. So you who haven’t been
as fortunate don't want to mlse thle
chance, for It may be the last one you'll
have. Certainly you’ll never be able
to see It under auch good circum
stances, for the actor market haa been
thoroughly ransacked by Klimt *
Gnunhi to secure the beet talent for
this great ull-nround-the-cnuntry tour
of their production. Get In line early
and secure the best seats to witness
the trials and tribulations of Mabel
and Howard Wilson; the.greatest ex
ample of stage villainy ever known, a«
presented by the "he" and “she" vil
leins of the play; the loving character
of the Little Mother, one of the most
enchanting of all stage children; the
comical Irishwoman; the excitable and
excrutlatlngly funny Frenchman and
the honaxt policeman, together with
the many other lifelike character* of
the play.
Theodore Kramer, the great melo
dramatic author, adapted this play
from the German, and thereby mode nil
enormous fortune, for he has been de.
riving royalties from It for ten years,
and the play has been given In every
country In the world. Women need
have no fear of being shocked when
»Itnesitng tills play, nor of having the
minds of their children spoiled, for the
comedy and other lines aro all clean,
ami there are no vulgar nor otherwise
offensive situations. Klimt ft Gaxxolo
have always stood for all that is good
and refined on the stagr, and In every
play they have ever presented have
eliminated every thing which might of
fend the most particular.
BETTY IN DREAMLAND
ORPHEUM HEADLINER
' Betty In Dreamland."
The biggest act In vaudeville!
That's what they say of the spectacu
lar musical comedietta which headlines
at the Orpheum next week.
Here's why they say It. The one act
carries an entire carload of scenery,
more thun ion costumes, a complete
cast of principals, beaded by Kathleen
Clifford and Arthur Hill, and a spright
ly chorus of eighteen charming singers
and dancers.
Those are a few reasons. Here’s some
more:
"Betty In Dreamland” has sight dis
tinct nets- song hits. The musical come
dietta was written by Anna Caldwell
and James O'Dea, authors of "Tha Top
o' th’ World." which ran a aolld jeason
In New York, with Bailey and Austin
appearing, and made a great hit here In
Atlanta earlier In the season.
Kathleen Clifford, who heads tha
company is one of the stage's most
popular and most winsome come
diennes. and Arthur Hill la a vaude
ville favorite everywhere. The chorus
of eighteen singers and dancers Is as
sprightly a bunch as ever tripped
across a stage.
