THE ATLANTA GEORGIAN AND NEWS: SATURDAY, -MAY 21, 1910.
HERE’S A BIG SNAKE STORY
AND PHOTO TO PROVE IT
Moat snake stories need to be taken
with a grain of salt, as It were, but
here's a veracious account of an ad
venture- with a serpent that may be
taken Just so. For If you don't believe
It you may (to look at the snake Itself.
The snake Is—or was. rather—a rat
tler. eight feet long, with a walat meas
urement of twelve Inches, and had ex
actly seventeen rattlea and a button at
tached to one end of Its system.
It was killed Thursday by James
Tankersly, of Brunswick, altho Mr.
Tankersly wishes It distinctly under
stood that that first syllabic of his cog.
nomen had not the slightest connection
with his seeing the monster reptile.
Mr. Tankersly had been out hunting
near his home and was returning across
the golf links, when he came upon the
rattler. He admits himself that he
paused quite a good deal when he first
sighted the big worm, and when
colled up as well os Its corpulence
would allow and rattled all those seven,
teen rattles'he came to a full, complete
and decisive stop. Then he raised his
trusty gun and shot the head oft the
wriggling, hideous reptile.
The rattler was of the "swnmp" va
riety and was one of. If not the largest,
ever killed In Georgia.
Mr. Tankersly had the skin stulted
and presented it to Ills friends of Colo
nial Company.No. IS. Knights of Py
thias. who were drilling nt Brunswick
at the time. The company will pre-
serve the skin and exhibit It as a curi
osity at their lodge rooms.

Paris, May 21,—-The police today be
gan tracing step by step the career of
Bister Candida, who Is accused of vast
Jewelry frauds, and It waa declared that
her sensational swindles would prove
more astounding than those of Mme.
Humbert and C'assle Chadwick. Start
ling revelations. Involving some of the
foremost men of France, will mark the
uncovering of her gigantic operations,
according to selm-offlclal admissions.
The simple nun, head of a great sys
tem of charities, appears to have Jug
gled finances with the boldness and
deftness of men trained to the game of
high flnanceerlng. When the police
today finished their examination of the
Incriminating letters left by Sister Can
dida's associate, Dr. Leon Petit, whose
suicide caused the woman's arrest. It
was given out seml-offlclally that the
amount of money and Jewelry Involved
In the alleged frauds Is considerably
more than tne 381)0,000 first mentioned
and probably will prove over 31,000,000.
The arrest of tho woman, who was
once superior of the Order of St. Anne,
has already become a political Issue.
Just as the clericals seized upon the
thefts of the church land funds by the
government agents, so the supporters
of the government have taken the Sis

victimized by the nun. according to thh
authorities, besides the Jewelers from
whom sho obtained gems worth mil
lions of francs, ostensibly to sell on

In her charitable work. Sister Candlde
today declared that all the Jewels would
he returned or paid for. Meanwhile, a
search of every pawnshop In France
and In London Is being conducted In
the hope of recovering more of the Jew
elry.
Ex-President Loubet, who Is honorary
head of the sanitarium for tuberculosis
children at Ormeson, founded by the
nun, today admitted tha^ he knew little
about her. The. government has begun
an Investigation of the lottery which
she managed for her charities.

nnd highly enjoyed talks the old sol

CATHOLIC ORPHANAGE

Washington, Ga„ Msy 21.—Instead of
the 89,000 Improvements at St. Josephs
orphanage In this city as proposed last
fall, there will be additions and Im
provements In the buildings of this In

decision In the matter was reached at a
recent conference here between Bishop
J. Kelley, of Bavannah, and Father
pier, of Atlanta.
rlie plans and specifications for nec
essary additions to the dormitory space
were made last Oetobar with the Inten
tion of completing the work by the be.
ginning of the present year. Before
letting the contract, however, Bishop
Kelley, on his return from a visit to the
Vatican, came to Washington and do-
cldpd that the work should be held up
for a few months until the other con
templated changes could be mnde.
The contract has been let to J. H.

work will commence In a few days.

GREAT INTEREST BEING SHOWN
IN ANSLEY PARK PROPERTY
the large number of beautiful homes
that are being built In the section ad
joining Piedmont park.
Many business men say that they
have hurried the building of their
homes In this section In order that they
may enjoy all of the outdoor sports
right at their own homes. Many of
these are business men who must
snatch their favorite form of sport dur
ing the last hour or two of the after
noon, and unless they can And this op
portunity close at home, they must go
without, as they have not the time to
return to their homes, change to golf
togs or clothes suitable for other forms
of outdoor sport, and then go to sonic I
distant club grounds for pursuing their I
Own special pastlma
Big Profit* In “Twin Park” Section
Another cause given by many who
are now building or preparing to build
la that by locating their homes In this
section they will provide their families
with Ideal conditions for the bringing
up of liealthy, happy chlldrert, the near
by playgrounds offering every oppor
tunity for the youngsters to profitably
enjoy themselves and develop strong
bodies under the direction of qualified
physical experts, rather than take
chances with rushing trolley cars where
they are forced to play upon the streets
Still others explain that they have
chosen this section because of the ab
solute guarantee against crowding with
the present wonderful growth of At
lanta, the many miniature parks In
Ansley Park as well as Piedmont park
adjoining, affording plenty of fresh air
among these foothills of the Blue Ridge
mountains for all future time.
Investors, too, are planning the erec.
tlon of hand some residences, realising
that In Atlanta, as well as In all othet
large cities, those who can afford to,
will pay any price to secure homes en
joying all of the many unequaled ad
vantages of this “Twin Park" section.
These Investors are both building
homes and buying lots before the com
pletion of Piedmont park advances
values In this section to the highest In
the city, and because of the fact that
all of the approaches are now built up
solid and the.future growth must be
In this "Twin Park" section and to the
northward In a way that will soon
make this same section close-in resi
dential property.
While the recent wet weather has In
terfered somewhat with the many new
homes now In course of construction,
there has never been a time in At
lanta's history when so many real
dences were being erected aa at this
Immediate present. This Is particular
ly true of the north side, while In Ans
ley Park the number of handsome
homes now under way breaks even the
remarkable past records of this great
residential section.
In addition to the many elaborate
residences already started, a large
number of Atlanta's most prominent
citizens In social and business circles
have made every preparation to begin
building next month. Others who have
had their plans for new homes com
pleted and who expected to start work
some time ago have simply been wait
ing for the end of the present period
of wet weather. .JHany of these have
already had their homes staked out
and others have begun work on the
foundations.
Altogether the present year Is certain
to surpass last year's record of a hun
dred handsome homes erected In the
Park, some of these being among the
most elaborate residences In the city.
One reason for the exceptional ac.
tlvlty In this 'Twin Park" section Is
the acceptance of the plans of the Olm.
stead Brothers, the famous landscape
engineers of Boston, for the transfor
mation of Piedmont park Into the most
beautiful pleasure ground In the South.
With the completion of these plans,
this section le certain to become the
"Central Park West" of Atlanta and
will enjoy all of the many advantages
which have made this same portion of
New York city so Justly famous and
the home of many of Gotham's richest
members of the exclusive social sets.

It had been several years since Dr.

he found many changes. But with
all the changes he declares that New

The rushing, whirling, terrlfle. seem

harmless, the Titanic rock banks all
along Its course giving absolute protec.
