the farmers and
THE POULTRY
INTERESTS OF
GEORGIA.
There it i
cleat of people In
the United State,
today who con-
. Mif.iB duct their buel-
7 'Wpt ' 1 ness as loosely as
1 do th0 Southern
"** farmers. They re.
mind me of the
fellow who work-
ed from youth to
old ash on a little,
poor, rocky farm,
eking out a mis
erable existence,
when one day he
found a bright
piece of yellow
rock that proved to be gold, and he
was suddenly rich. Farmers In the
South have a gold mine within their
reach and the)’, unlike the old man
above mentioned—who did not know
that his log cabin rested on a gold
mine—stand face to face with a great
source of wealth and just alt still and
let others, from other states, gather the
harvest that Is theirs but for the reap-
For years I have been watching the
Northern poultry Journals, and re-
cently. very closely, In regard -to the
manner In which farmers In the North
and particularly In the northwest, man-
aged the small things of their farmer
These Western farmers are busy
men. The crop season Is short and
they must have a now way of doing
their work or It Is never. With them
outdoor work on their farms In winter
Is next to an Impossibility, and so
something must be done during the
winter months Indoors to keep down
the expenses and also to keep the t
boiling. Facing almost Insurmountal
difficulties that take not only labor but
money to overcome, they build expen
sive poultry houses, and make more
money on chickens and eggs In spite of
the fact that It Is largely Indoor work
and very’ expensive, than do the South
ern fnrmers. and sell them, too, for
less money. They produce more chick
ens and eggs than we do. They do not
waste their time nor their money fool
ing with barnyard stock, but breed the
best that money can buy. They want
the best because the)’ know that the
feed bill is not greater when the hens
produce ten to twelve dosen eggs a
venr than those which produce six or
eight dozen a year. They also have
up-to-date methods In handling the
egg and poultry output Some of them
produce eggs only, some only broil
ers and fowls to roast, selling the sur
plus eggs. They can do this because they
have made themselves familiar with the
best stock and know Just what they
are capable of doing. Now, Georgia Is
short on eggs and poultry every year
over 94,000,000, and farmers beyond her
borders are reaping this harvest while
our farmers, with half the expense and
half the labor, could not only keep this
money at home but could easily raise
chickens and eggs enough to supply the
home demand, and have a surplus to
■ell their neighbors.
YOUR UNCLE DUDLEY.
Dear Uncle Dudley:
Please tell me what kind of chickens
are the best. I have Rhode Island
Reds. Indian Game, Buff Rock, Ply
mouth Rock. From your friend^
Marietta, Ga., May 17, 1910.'
Answer.
The above Is a question that you
must answsr yourself. You have named
three breeds that rate.up among the
best that are bred in the United States.
Wo all have our personal likes and dis
likes. and If you wlah to see this ex
emplified Just go to a poultry show.
You w ill see there men who sometimes.
In severe terms, condemn a good breed
that the next man that you meet can
net say enough In Its favor. Now, se
lect one of the breeds above mentioned
and get rid of the others. Stick to the
breed selected and devote your entire
attention to It. and you will have bet
ter success than by trying to breed the
four. YOUR UNCLE DUDLEY.
