INDIAN RUNNER DUCKR
The laying qualities of these water
fowla surpass those of any other known
fowl; even the I^eghorn hen gives her
merry cackle every timo she lays an
egg. These ducks don’t waste their
breath over such a simple thing, so
often repeated ns laying an egg. She
straighten up, look uround. take
drink of water and a bite of sand and
go off, looking up the raw material to
make other eggs out of. Fanciers some
times ask for the white egga and want
ducks that don't lay green egga (some
aay blue, but I have closely observed
the egga for two years from a large
flock and I can say they are neither
white, green nor blue). The normal
egg of the Indian Runner Is not spec
kled or spotted. It is light colored—
nearly white—hut with a tinge of blu
ish green at time* hardly noticeable
and passing for « white egg in a cane
with other egg*. The thinner the shell
the whiter the egg Is. With shells too
thin to Incubate, they are ns white os
White Leghorn eggs, hut as the shells
get thicker they become delicately tint
ed; so do not expect to get eggs the
color of White Leghorns from Indian
Runner ducks Another fallacy may
be exploded right here. It Is said that
they lay their eggs all around In their
pen aiid in the morning you look over
the ground and pick them up.
did that way for six months and
cleaned the soiled egg* and then I
concluded that ns there seemed to be
egga In tho same places every morning,
thero was a method In their laying, no I
took some five-Inch boards three feet
long and made some squares boxes
without any bottom and set
them in each pen. placing them full
of straw and the very first night they
made nest* (generally In one corner)
In the boxes and ns many as ten have
laid In one ne*t. Ho now each morn
ing I get nice clean eggs out of the
tieata—one for nearly every duck—and
It la seldom that nn egg is lain outside
of these boxes; so 1 say, give them
proper nests and get nice clean eggs,
gnd It will save you trouble and Rive
better hatches. W. H. SISSON.
