ROOSEVELT ARRAIGNS
NEW YORK DEMOCRATS
Dunkirk, N. Y.—Theodore Roosevelt
fired the opening cun here today In
his campaign for Henry L. Stlmaon for
governor of New York and It was a
terrific broadside against Tammany
Hall and the Wall Street Interests.
The ex-president openly charged that
there Is a coalition between Tammany
and "the Interests.” the purpose of
which Is to control the entire state.
The Tammany alliance with Wall
Street, he asserted. Is the most
"shameful combination” of crooked pol
itics and crooked finance that the state
has seen since the days of Tweed. He
inveighed against some of the New
York newspapers, saying they were In
the Tammany-WaU Street alliance. Mr.
Roosevelt did not avert to the ‘old
guard” of the Republican party or hts
victory over them In the Saratoga con
vention.
The ex-president drew the issue
clearly and firmly as between the Re
publican party fighting for decency on
one side and Tammany with the Wall
Street interests on the other.
The ex-president made his sizzling
speech at Washington park, where 10,-
«©0 persons had congregated to hear
him open the campaign. He sold that
no honest man could afford to vote for
the Democratic ticket in New Yoik.
Six Persons Drown.
Criceieth, Wales.—Six persons have
been drowned in the wreck of two fish
ing smacks ofT this point. It is feared.
Gales have been disturbing marine traf
fic for several days.
TROPICAL CYCLONE IS
SWEEPING OVER CUBA
New Orleans, La.—Authentic news
comes that the full force of the hurri
cane which has been sweeping over
Cuba struck Havana this afternoon. All
business in thfc city has been suspend
ed. The force of the wind ripped the
roofs off buildings and uprooted many
trees. It is reported that several have
been seriously Injured, but no deaths
have been reported from Havana yet
A private dispatch, however, says
that the Cuban town of Casild* has
been devastated by. the cyclone. It is
reported that many lives have been lost
there.
The storm Is now sweeping the gulf
coast. Gulf shipping has been ordered
into port, but It is feared that many
vessels may be in the path of the storm.
The weather bureau at Washington
Friday morning issued the following
storm warning:
“Tropical storms centered near the
extreme western end of Cuba of con
siderable intensity are apparently mov
ing northwestward. Will cause dan
gerous gales next 24 hours along coast
of southern and central Florida and
southeast Gulf of Mexico. Hurricane
warnings expected from Dunellon to
Jupiter.”
Only One Prosperous Road.
Washington.—ffn the railroad hearing
here before the Interstate commerce
commission on higher freight rates.
President Brown, of the New York Cen
tral, said he knew only one road that
did not need to advance rates, the Lake
Shore.

house is now open for business, tho
the ceremonies In connection with the

Atlanta.—Ben F. Perry, assistant to
State Treasurer J. Pope Brown, has
just issued & book in which he has
classified detailed information in re
gard to the 600 or more state banks
which make their reports to the state
treasurer. The condition of the banks
is excellent, as shown by the book.
Indicted For Bribery*
New York.—Former State Senator
Prank J. Gardner, of Brooklyn, was in
dieted as a briber this afternoon by
the New York grand Jury* Senator
Foelker, whose one vote defeated the
anti-race track gambling bills, testified
before the grand Jury. A detective was
sent at once to Scranton, where Gard
ner Is hold in IIO.VOU bond as a fugi
tive frofh justice. He Is alleged to
have offered Foelker $25,000 to vote
against the bilL
Flies Over Washington.
Washington.—While thousands were
watching him. Claude Graham**-White
made a flight over Washington'today.

He Was Bad Coon.
Columbus, Ohio.—In a running pistol
battle between Policemen James, Cree-
don and Zetty and George Douglass, a
South Carolina negro, the policemen
captured the latter after wounding him.
The fight occurred at an early hour this
morning in the darkness. The negro
started a rough house because be
wasn't Invited to a dance. He killed
negro woman.
Remains Washed Ashore.
Chicago.—The remains of Walter B.
Coles, president of the Keefe-Coles
Printing Company, who mysteriously*

Michigan early today.

urer led the ticket In the election on
October 5, with 92.77$ votea. The offi
cial return, for aJl the atate houao
officer, with the exception of the gov
ernor were made public Friday morn
ing. The return, of the election for
member, of the judiciary have not been
consolidated.
A striking feature developed from
the figures given out la the $31 votea
cast for tho Socialist candidates. In
every Instance Socialist ballots were
marked straight.
The totals show: For secretary of
state, Philip Cook. $$.733: comptroller
general. XV. A. Wright, 8J.743: treas
urer, W. J. Speer. $3,778: attorney gen
eral, Thomas Felder, $3,<00; commis
sioner of agriculture, T. G. Hudson.

RICH ART DEALERS ARE
CHARGED WITH FRAUDS
New York.—Unusual activity about
the United States customs house today
indicated that other raids would today
follow the spectacular move of the Fed
eral authorities against Duveen Broth
ers, the rich and prominent Interna
tional art dealing firm.
While no official statement was forth
coming, the report that other art firms
would fall Into the dragnet of the
government would not down.
Allegations that millions of dollars
worth of art treasures, brought Into
this country without the payment' of
full customs duty, had found their way
into the palatial homes of J. P. Mor
gan, Henry Clay Frick, of Pittsburg:
the late Charles Yerkes. of Chicago and
New York; George Gould, the late
Charles T. Barney and others brought
to the fore today the Interesting ^ques
tion: “Can these works of art be seised
by the government for unpaid duty
Charged with a gigantic conspiracy
to defraud the United States govern
ment thru the undervaluation of art
works, Benjamin Duveen and Henry
J. Duveen, brothers In the art concern
bearing their name, are held under $60.-
000 and $75,000 bonds, respectively,
while the officials are working on va
rious angles of the case. It Is said the
frauds will reach millions.

against two other brothers and an un
cle who are members of the firm, but
they are now In London.
Notorious Crook Captured.
Troy, N. Y.—Tim Sheedy. one of the
most notorious crooks In the country*
who escaped two months ago from the
Hartford, Conn., Jail, where he was
serving a 30-year term for burglary,
was captured here last night w*hile at
tempting to enter a vacant house. One
thousand dollars reward was offered
for his capture.

race between Congressman William M.
Howard and Colonel Samuel J. Trib
ble. In the Eighth district, are being
watched with Interest by both factions
It seems certain now thi* Tribble will
not accept the proposition of his op
ponent to hold a second primary In
which every voter who did not vote for
the nominee In the governor's election
would be barred, for Colonel Tribble
states that his offer was to hold a sec
ond “white” primary, not barring any
white voter, and his friends are confi
dent that Mr. Howard's provisional
acceptance will not be taken up.

Rome, Ga.—By the confession of H.
H. Walker, a young white man. caught
In the act of selling corn liquor to ne
groes, the Rome police believe they
have uncovered the plan of certain
Chattanooga ttquor dealers to handle
w hisky In this city. Walkeris trial will
be held this afternoon and Interesting
developments are expected.
Farmers in Meeting.
Athens, Ga.—Tho Farmers Union
Cotton congress met here yesterday,
holding two sessions. About 100 prom
inent delegates attended.

Thomaston, Ga.—The Bank of Thom-
aston has been organised with a capi
tal of $25,000, fully subscribed by local

Richard A. Ballinger, secretary of the
interior, was slightly injured in a wreck
in Cincinnati.
Jesse Baugh, a Floyd county. Geor
gia, farmer, shot and fatally wounded
his brother-in-law. Richard Mathis.
John Harper, now serving a life sen
tence In the Georgia tenitentlary, will
be tried on a murder charge in Fan
nln county next week.
Tom Sheedy, a notorious New York
crook, tried to hang himself with a
■hoe string, following his arrest.
The fear of an uprising in Spain
against the king has about subsided.
Owing to the crusade against smug
gling customs duties have trebled the
first year at the New York port.
Mrs. Frank Ralshe. of New York,
who made a successful flight In an
aeroplane of her own Invention, will be

carefully. Maurice Lang, a Chicago
lawyer, killed himself.

Alleged Tiger Hit Heavily.
Anniston, Ala*—Jack Garner was
fined $150 and given e. sentence of 60
days at hard labor by Judge Coleman.
In the city court of Anniston, on a
charge of having violated the state
wide prohibition law.
Corn Prizes Awarded.
Thomaston, Ga*—The Upson County
Com club ban awarded prises for the
ltlO yield. The awards were as fol
lows: First prise. |25, to W. J. Ker
sey. yield 102 bushels per acre; second
prise. $15. to J. F. Trice, yield 78 bush
els per acre; third prise, $10. to T. B.
Trice, yield 68 bushels p»-r acre. Ra
leigh Green, of this county, who was
not n member of the com club, also
raised 102 bushels on one acre.
Family Dead From Gas.
Now York.—Practically an entire
family Is dead from gas early today in
Brooklyn. Adolph Kuna, his son.
George, and daughter. Clara, were
found dead In their home. Mrs. Kuns
and a son, William, were found dying
and rushed to the German hospital,
where no hope Is held out for their re
covery. The tragedy was caused by a
i tube.
Bomb-Throwing Exhibition.
Washington.—With nearly a hundred
army and navy officers among the spec
tators. Claude Grahame-White, the
English aviator, today gave a daring
exhibition of ”bomb” throwing as he
flew* above the field at Bennlng race
track on the outskirts of Washington.
