TO BRANCH OUT A BIT
Increased Membership Calls for
Change in Charter ^nd
Broader Scope.-
As the result of the splendid Increase
In the rnembershlp of the Chamber of
Commerce thru the recent campaign, a
great many matters of Importance will
probably be mapped out by the board of
directors at their meeting on the first
.Wednesday In December. With a thou
sand members the Income will be In
creased practically 60' per cent, and with
this amount at the disposal of the cham
ber Its sphere and influence will be great
ly increased.
One of the first things which will be
taken up In all probability Is a thorough
revision of the constitution and charter
of the chamber. A resolution has been
drafted by the chairmen of all the com
mittees which is to be presented to the
directors asking them to appoint a re
organization committee to revise the
charter. In case the charter Is revised It
will probably mean an Increase in the
working force of the chamber, which has
always been too small for the work that
It had to carry on. In addition to this.

MARY MANNER1NG IS SEEN
IN PLA Y OF GREAT INTEREST
By NORMAN BAXTER.
One can not apeak of "A Mun'a
World" aa Mary Mannerlng'x play, for
ahe hat gathered around her a cnat In
contradiction to the frequent plan of
starx, every member of which la an
artlat. In it, however. Mary Mnnner-
Inp hat n great opportunity to ahow
her true veraatlllty, nnd aho takes It.
The action of the play atarta In the
ilmplest and most natural way Imagin
able, with a scene depicting the life of
a little colony of workert around
Washington square; a acene which
could not be made IntereaUng except
that It came from the pen of a great
writer and la acted by a great company
of actora. Ita very simplicity is Its
chief charm. It Is a scene In which
every member of the audience could
feel a personal Inters,t, for It Is ex
actly what might have happened In
any home.
From the llrst act to the fourth the
action of the play advances, eliminat
ing the characters one by one, ns those
of Frank Ware. Mary Manenrlng. and
Malcom Oaakell, Alphonx Ethler. stand
out more strongly until the flnsl scene
when they alone hold the stage In a
line emotional scene.
The problem of the pity, for' It Is a
problem play. Is In a way Ideal. It
deals with the commonly accepted
standard of our life that says because
a man Is a man he may do things that
he will not bear In the woman he is to
marry. In "A Man's World” Frank

Ware takes the position that every man
may take In hla heart for an Ideal, but
which very few live up to; that a man
should be as pure as, the woman he
seeks.to marry or at least see the great
wrong In hi, position If he Is not. Dur
ing the scene In which this was dis
cussed between Frank nnd Malcolm
there was a peculiar stillness among
the men In the audience.
The acting of Mary Mannerlng. as
Frank Ware, n strong minded woman
with presumably one love, that for her
adopted son. Kiddle, Is superb. Rising
from the simplicity or the first act to
tha great emotional scenes In the third
and fourth, she makes use of the little
things that have stamped her a great
actress. Naturalness and simplicity
aeem to be the keynote of her work.
In her mother love for her adopted son,
she draws one character, and In her
mattrnal solicitude for the friends that
ahe has gathered around her yet an'
other character, but the distinction be
tween the two Is so fine—as It should
be—that at times It was passed over
by the audience.
The work of Alphons Ethler.-as Mal
colm Qaakell, Is excellent. He Is the
typical arrogant strong man who Is
used to getting what he Is after. Un
known to himself and to Frank Ware,
he Is the father of Frank's adopted
son, the mother having died at Frank’s
house In Paris. In the final scene,
where this becomes known and he ask,
her to forget that for their love, his
playing Is truly great.
Clara Oaks, by Helen Ormabee, Is
the third character which stands out
above the rest. It Is a shoddy, shabby
little character that she has to present,
and h«r work Is splendid. In the tragic
scene where she confesses to Frank
that her life is a failure, that she has
done nothing, and that no man has ever
loved her enough to ask her to marry,
she does some really wonderful work.
The rest of the cut Is fine, but the
work of no one member stands out
prominently above the rest unless It
be that of Chari*, Wyngate, as Fritz
Bohn. Leone Brune, by Ann Crewe;
Wells Trevor, by Arthur Bertelet;
Emile Orimaux, by Claus Bogs), and
Kiddle, by Mark Short, make up the
rest of the cast.
Miss Mannerlng has not been to At
lanta for many years, but after her!
presentation of "A Man's World" ahe 1
may call It homo with Impunity. She
play, at the Grand the remainder of
tho week.
