Mystery Surrounds Shooting.

the shooting of C. S. Miller, of Atlanta,
who Is now at tho Macon hospital un
der treatment for a bullet wound In
the bark, which he Is supposed to have
received In a difficulty with George
Hanrock yesterday morning about ~
o'clock bn lower Cherry-st.
"Third Degree” in Montgomery.
Montgomery, Ala.—That the third de
gree electrical method was used by City
Detective W. 8. Slgabee, of Birming
ham. In bringing an alleged confession
from Mortis Brown, a negro, was
brought out In the city court yesterday

Atlanta.—With the attendance swelled
by the addition of the commissioners of
agriculture from the Southern states
and a number of delegations that were
unable to arrive Tuesday, the work of
the boll weevil conference was resumed
Wednesday morning at 9 o’clock with
every delegate present.
During the morning session every
phase of the boll weevil, what it had
done, how it had done It. how it bod
been fought, and then what It might do
and how It could be fought most suc
cessfully In the future, was discussed.
Colonel W. L. Peck, vice president of
the Georgia Farmers union, presided In
the absence of President Csbanlss. He
introduced .the first and principal
speaker of the day. Dr. 8. A. Knapp, of
the United States bureau of plant in
dustry. Dr. Knapp said that he came
with an optimistic message, for he felt
that he boll weevil could be conquered
by the pursuance of proper methods.

Veterinarian Pleads Guilty.
Montgomery, Ala.—Philip L. Me-
Breen, of Pittsburg, Pa., until the fall
of 1900 employed as a veterinary snr-
gqon by the United States department
of agriculture, pleaded guilty in the
Federal court Tuesday to falsifying his
accounts and perjury with reference
to an inspection tour which he made
in this county in September, 1909.

Shooting at Mocena.
Mesons, Ga.—In a dispute over a cot
ton transaction. Jesse B. Hall, agent
of the Georgia railroad at this place,
was shot and fatally wounded by hls

London.—Dr. Hawley Harvey Crip-
pen was executed In the court yard bf
Pentonville prison at 9 o’clock this
morning for the murder of his wife.
Belle Elmore Crippen. He went calmly
to hls doom on the scaffold, wearing
the stylish clothes which had been hls
attire during his trial. Before hls ex
ecution he ate a light breakfast and
received the last rites of the Roman
Catholic church from the Rev. Father
E. M. Carvelle.
Dr. Crippen had awakened early and
his face wajj pale and drawn as bo
received his spiritual adviser, but ho
bore up until the end. Shortly after
Crippen’s execution the official an
nouncement was made that Crippen
had died without confessing or making
a statement of any kind. Despite this
fact. The Evening Times, a sensational
London paper, published what it de
clared to be an authentic confession by
Crippen, made by him to an old friend.
Denial* from Solicitor Arthur New
ton. Crlppen’s attorney: Superintendent
Froest, of Scotland Yard, and the su
perintendent of Pentonville prison
served to discredit the statement pub
lished by The Times, altho it is known
that for several days before Crippen’s
death Ethel' Claire LeNeve had at
tempted to sell to various newspapers
what purported to be the confession'of
Dr. Crippen.
Block Succeeds Inman.
Atlanta.—At a meeting of the board
of directors of the Atlanta National
bank Frank E. Block was elected vice
president of the institution to succeed
the lute Hugh T. Inman.
Coal Advance Suspended.
Washington.—The interstate com
merce commission Tuesday suspended
proposed advance on bituminous coal
rates over the Baltimore and Ohio un
til March 15 next.
Cox Goes to Tower.
Atlanta.—William Cox, the slayer of
Dr. J. R. Sewell, was Tuesday after
noon transferred from Grady hospital
to the Tower. He has recovered from
hls self-inflicted wounds, but is still
unable to talk.
Miller Succeeds Thompson.
Atlanta.—Announcement has been
mode of the appointment of Henry W.
Miller as assistant to the president of
the Southern railway, succeeding J. 8.
B. Thompson, resigned.

New York.—An international search
will be started for William Lewis, the
waiter suspect in the trunk murder
mystery, ss the result of Information
which has reached the police that he
was seen two years ago working as a
waiter In a hotel in Germany.

Rome, Ga.—Despite hls plea that

for a possum hunt. Jack Way castor, a
young white man, was found guilty of
illegul sale today by Recorder Yancey
and sentenced to a fine of 8150 or six
months on the streets.
