To mo It seems forever impossible to
read this story without anger. The
whole thing is, to use the language of
men concerning men, so appallingly un
fair. Our ffcmiliarUy with the pro
founder meanings of the cross makes us
perhaps less conscious of the injustice
of the proceedings on the purely human
level. Our knowledge that He was de
livered by “the determinate counsel ana
foreknowledge of God*’ is at least in
danger of taking the keenness from our
sense of the gross wickedness of the
whole proceeding. To examine the
story as on *a purely human level Is to
be conscious that the action of these
priests from beginning to end was In
expressibly mean and dastardly. I free,
ly confess that I never read It without
sympathizing with Peter and hls sword.
Watching the procedure in imagination,
one longs to break in and smite and
Then Peter speaks to us thru hia let
ter, the man who m the garden drew
his sword and who, following thru these
earlier stages, saw everything, and he
says of his Lord: “Who, when He was
reviled, reviled not again.” and as I
read the words all my hot haste is re
buked. and I see the shame of my an
ger. Somehow in the presence of the
infinite calm of the suffering King I
become conscious that the pulsing of
the blood in thirst for revenge Is part
of the sin which compelled His suf
fering. Then there Is nothing for us
to do but. reverently and In solemn awe.
to watch Him in the midst of the
wicked and appalling travesty of jus
tice.
The first matter that arrests the at
tention Is that indicated in the first
part of Peter’s declaration, “He was
reviled.” The rulers at last have Him
in their power. Betrayed by one of the
inner circle of Hls own disc piles to all
| human seeming He is successfully
trapped, and now they are determined
that He shall not escape them. Their
method Is at once a revelation of the
depravity of their own hearts, and of
the absolute and recognized purity of
His. They have no charge that they
can prefer against Him. There Is no
law that He has broken, no wrong that
He has done; therefore “they sought
false witness.” and they even found
that it was dlflteatt to find. At first
they were unsuccessful. Can there bo
a more remarkable testimony to the
Integrity of Hls life and the carefulness
of His speech?
At last, however, two are found and
their testimony Is of that dangerous
character against which It is hard to
set up a defense. They declared that
He had said. *1 am able to destroy the
temple of God and to build it In three
days.” What He had really said was
entirely different. In answer to a de
mand for a sign. He had said, “Destroy
this temple, and *in three days I will
raise It up." He did not suggest that
He was able to destroy, but rather that
what they destroyed He could raise up.
Of course at the Ume they did not un
derstand that He referred to Hi* death
and resurrection; but at the time they
did not criticise Him for declaring He
could destroy, because they did not
understand Him to have made any such
declaration. What they had then said
to Him was, “Forty and six years was
this temple in building, and wilt Thou
raise It up In three days?” Now, the
testimony is the distortion of some
thing already said, and at such a dis
tance that it was quit© easy to make it
extremely difficult for any to contra
dict He made no attempt to answer
the lying charge. Thereupon the high
priest made Him a direct and personal
challenge as to His silence, to which
no answer was given.
Then immediately, in the solemn
terms of a legal oath, the priest ap
pealed to Him. not on the testimony of
the false witnesses, but concerning His
own person and His claims, “I adjure
Thee by the living God. that Thou be

The liquor dealers are seeding out
to many libraries of the country free
copies of books and pamphlets which
are nothing but carefully prepared ar
guments setting forth the use of alcohol
as a beverage and the good effects
which they claim follow its use. These
books also seek to show the evil ef
fects of all restrictive law against the
sale of liquor. Library committees can
not be too careful in this matter or
their shelves will soon be filled with
very objectionable books.

The decrease In the consumption of
spirits In Great Britain last year was
10,000,000 gallons over the preceding
year. The decrease In taxes to the
government amounted to more than
$7,000,000.
The city of New York spends an
nually more than $25,000,000 in fighting
the evils which would not exist if pro
hibitlon prevailed.
Mrs. Carry Nation was struck in the
face by a young man in Lincoln. Nebr.
recently. She pushed him aside be
cause, as she said, he Impudently blew
cigarette smoke In her face. In anger
he retaliated with a blow.
The city of Bokard. Asia, has been
“dry” 400 years. Nothing but milk or
water is used as a beverage. The vio
lator of the liquor law is whipped in
the public market place and a man’s
breath ia sufficient evidence to convict
him. A second offense is punishable
with death.
“I Suffered Years
With My Back.”
Backache resulting from weak
kidneys, a bad cold or other cause,
usually renders the sufferer unfit
for work and often results in per
manent disability.

different physicians. More than a

the Christ, the Son of God." While
Jesus had given no reply to the charge
of the false witnesses and no answer
to the personal question of the priest.
He immediately availed Himself of the
legal oath and replied to It with per
fect clearness and definiteness. Thus
an oath, in the midst of these sur
roundings. He claimed Messlahshlp. and
Immediately, let It be observed, not on
the testimony of the false witnesses
which for some reason was allowed to
drop, but on Hls own claim of Mes-
siahshlp, a definite charge of blasphe
my was formulated against Him.
Thus was He reviled, and thru the
whole of the processes He maintained
the attitude of quiet and patient dig
nity. never stooping to the level of the
angry methods of Hls foes; In answer
to their rcvlllngs. never reviling.
Against the false witnesses He uttered
no word of protest. In answer to the
personal Inquiry of the priests. He was
silent. When the legal oath was of
fered Him, He at once, without a single
word of bitterness, took advantage of
It and claimed to be the Messiah, the
Son of God, adding to'-'the claim ttie
affirmation that the claim would yet he
vindicated In a new manifestation
wherein He should be seen sitting on
the right hand of power, and coming in
the clouds of heaven.
The contrasts of the lesson arc most
striking—the hot feverishness of His
foes and the calm dignity of the King
the appeal on their part to all base
things to Insure hls destruction, and
the rest in simple truth which char
acterized Hls speech. Looking at Him
alone, we are overawed by the wonder
ful merging of patience and power, of
faithfulness and truth, of dignified re
serve and authoritative speech; and
such observation forever convinces the
honest heart of the uselessness of re
viling, of the folly of answering anger
by anger, and of the overwhelming
periority of quietness and confidence
over all protest and panic.
Snch examination of the story In it
self sets everything in a new light, and
the first appearances are contradicted
by careful examination of actual facts.
He Is seen as the Arrested and Ac
cused, while they are the sclf-constl-
tuted Judges. Yet we look again and
know that In the midst of all tho
strange excitement Ha, the calm and
dignified One, Is the Judge, while they
are prisoners at His bar, the accused
and guilty ones
And there is a yet more wonderful
change. They appear to be vindictive
victors, while He Is the helpless Vic
tim. Yet ns we look again wo see
that they are sinners In very deed, hut
He Is suffering at their hands In or
der that oven they may receive pardon,
and purity, and peace at Hls hands. In
this scene human Justice is revealed as
at an end, lacking every element of
mercy, while the Justice of God Is cre
ating a way for itself by which it will
be able to act in mercy toward sin.
