effect that no good would come from
the recent conference held In Atlanta,

laid; that the conference aim ply catne

Knapp and had a number of speeches,
the plana of procedure being made In
secret and the Georgia state officer*
kept In the dark.
Following the publication of this, the
attention of K J. Paxon. president:

Chamber of Commerce, and H. G.
Hastings, of the boll weevil commit
tee. was culled to The Georgian's ar
ticle. Their reply In substance follows:
"The Idea of a boll weevil confer-
nce originated In the Chamber of
Commerce some months ago, the first
suggestion coming from Dr. H. K.
Stockbrldge. .Members of the depart
ment of agriculture xvero consulted and
Entomologist XVorshant prepared a bul
letin. the printing of which xvn* paid
for by tho Chamber of Commerce.

torney’s Office Given a
Fine Place.
Colonel M. L. Covington, of the Unit
ed State* district attorney's office, has
been appointed parole officer of the
Atlanta. Federal penitentiary and will
assume his new duties In a few days.
Colonel Covington was one of many
Applicants for the position and con
gratulations on his success are pouring
In upon him from lawyers from all over
the state where his dutie* as an at
tache of the United States court have
carried him. *
As parole officer he.will have to look
after all the Federal convicts released
under the new parole act, and to see
that they are living up to. all the con
dition* on which they gained their lib
erty. President Robert V'. La Dow, of
the parole board, who announced the
appointment, stated that the position
was one of great Importance and re
sponsibility and that Colonel Coving
ton was nnmed for the position, not on
account of his political Influence, but
solely on account of his fltne**.
In speaking of his appointment. Colo
nel Covington said:
“My one greatest object will be to
better mankind. I believe that the ma
jority of men, having once felt the
strong hand of the law. repent for their
alns and are ready to lead a straight
forward life If the opportunity were
given them. Only those prisoners who
are believed- to have reformed will be
paroled, and f will do all In my power
to a hi them.”
The parole board, which is how In
session In the Atlanta prison, got down
to actual business Baturday and re
viewed about fifteen applications.
The sessions of the board nrc private
none but the member* and the prison
ers whose application Is being reviewed
being admitted. Applicants for parol©
are not allowed on attorney, tho the
prisoner Is allowed the privilege of
stating why he should be paroled.
It will probably he about two weeks
liefofe the board completes Its work,
and no Information will be given out
until each case has been reviewed by
the attorney general of the United
States.

of deputies at the recent general con
vention of the Episcopal church In Cin
cinnati adopted these resolutions, which

"Whereas, the situation of oppression
and violation of men'* inalienable rights
by the lawless element in Russia la

"Whereas, the persecution seems to
be chiefly directed against our blessed

Census Durand lias announced that th©
population of Oklahoma state Is 1,667,155.
as compared with a population for the
uam© area (then consisting of Oklahoma
territory and Indian territory! In 1900 of
790,397. The Increase from 1900 to 1907
at. which time tho territories were ad
mitted as states, was 623,786. or 78.9-per
cent. A special census of Oklahoma state
was taken In 1907 and the population was
shown to then be 1,414.177. The Increase
