Preparing Bird* for the Show*
and Some Other Matters That
Concern Those Who Hare Just
Commenced to Raise Poultry.
I have of late
been In receipt of
far too many let
ters with a Btamp
Inclosed nsklnff
for Information
about many tilings
that would bo of
Interest to many
who read tho
poultry oolumn of
Those who writ#
with stamp In
closed ulmost In
variably say that
their totters aro
not for publica
tion In The Geor
gian. It frequently happens that two
or throe letters are received In this way
In which about tho same questions aro
aaked. Now I wish to say, as I have
said More In thta column, that 1 can
not answer letters of this kind except
thru Tho Georgian. The object of this
column Is to help every reader of The
Georgian, and while I would like to
reply to each Individual. I can not for
want of tlmu reply to these letters at
the expenso of those who read The
Georgian, and who are helped by a re
ply to them In this paper.
I have before me now three! or four
lettera of thin kind. In two of them I
am requested to Inform tho writers
how to prepare their birds for tho show
room. I will try to reply to these and
leave tho others for another article, and
all letters of this kind will be answered
In The Georgian In future.
One of the most Important things to
be done In the preparation of a bird for
exhibition Is to train It to act properly
in coops. The bird should bo cooped
and handled every day for a week or
two before the show Is held. Let It
K t hungry; make It eat from your
nd; treat It gently; let is know that
you do not want to Injure It; moke It
your friend. A great many breeders
fall to do this. Their birds aro fed
well; their feathers look bright and
glossy, but when you put your hand
Into tho coop to take them up they
dash' around In tho coop, rumple or
break their feathers, and that makes
them present a very bod appearance.
Tha Judge can hardly keep them still
long enough to carefully examine them.
Agalif ttfsy present a very bad appear,
anee fn the coop. They go to tho back
of (ha coop; have their heads down and
do .not show off to half the advantage
of the gentle, fearless bird.
Birds should be carefully fed. I
Should thlhk, for two or three weeks
before the show opens. They should
not be over fat. Never try to force a
bird over the standard weight. What
you want to do Is to give them plenty
. f l od pur* well-balanced food to sat-
'■ f their hunger, but not enough at
any time to make them lasy. Give
them plenty of exercise. Have them In
■. clean dry yard so that their feathers
will always present a dean, bright, tidy
appearance. Should they get their
feathers soiled, carefully wash them os
directed In one or two articles that
have appeared In this column recently.
Now another Important matter Is
this; You should, about ten days
befoip the show, teed occasionally on
sunflower seed, or wheat Is better; us*
Spratt’a condition feed according to his
directions. This will pat a rich gloss
on their feather* and thereby add
much to their appearance.
- Another matter that should receive
your careful attention Is the bead and
legs. Ton should wash their heads and
legs two or three times, using Ivory
or Castile ooad. Just ss you get these
part* dry you should grease them well
with sweet or castor oil. Keep them
In a coop free from dust until the oil
dries in.
tlons In yoor mind you will soon learn
Just how to turn the trick that cop-
: lures the blue ribbon.
YOUR UNCLE DUDLEY.
KEEPING POULTRY IN CONFINE
MENT.
A subscriber wishes to know If sha
can keep chickens confined In a lot 40
feet square. Chickens can bo kept In
a very small space If that space Is
properly tended. Rome breeders keep
six hens In a portable house three by
six feet the year around,, and get good
returns In eggs and fertility, but It
requires more work to keep chickens
in cramped quarters than with larger
range. The ground must be frequently
spaded and kept clean. In a small ln-
closuro. the grain burled In the litter
to Induce exerclso, and the coop or col
ony house kept scrupulously clean. All
the average farmer’s wife has time to
do to tho chicken hoiifces is to keep
them reasonably clean; the small lot Is
all right, but keep a plentiful supply of
grit and litter In the Ipt, provide green
food each day, and If the ground Is left
bare, keep It spaded up and sweet
smelling. A poultry yard should be
graded to let the water drain away
from the house. A damp run la un
wholesome.—Wallace Farmer.
AMONG THE EXCHANGES.
Duck eggs are In demand by con
fectioners. ns they Impart a glass to
their Icing which can not be hod with
hen eggs. For making plum puddings,
duck eggs aro more economical than
those of fowls, being both larger in
site and richer. In the household of
the writer duck eggs are used In mak
ing oil kinds of cakes, omeletts, cook
ing generally, and they/fcro also rel
ished frtedA-Exchange.
The following recipe for carbolated
kerosene emulsion gives not only a
vermin killer, but also an odor to the
hen house that Is effective In the cure
of cases of bud cold and discharges of
mucous substance from the nostrils:
Half pound ordinary laundry soap, one
gallon of water, one quart kerosene oil.
four ounces crude carbolic acid. Cut
the soap In small pieces and drop Into
the water and boll. When it cornea to
a boll, remove from the fire and add
the keroeene. Shako or stir the mix
ture until nearly cooL Put away In a
well covered vessel until wanted, at
which time add about twelve to four
teen quarts of hot water and the car-
botlo acid; mix well. Use as a spray
once a week.—Exchange.
