Both Civil, and Criminal Suits
May Follow Chicago
Investigation.
Chleago. June 14.—Both civil and
criminal tulta likely will re.ult from
the investigation of the lumber truit,
which la being conducted In Chicago
by a rpedal Federal grand Jury.
This was announced today when the
Inquiry was resumed In the Federal
building. The grand Jury Is gathering
evidence as to the relationship between
the companies alleged to be members
of the trust. A recent precedent for
the double-barreled action Is the beet
trust prosecution, now pending before
Judge Carpenter.
A number of out-of-town lumbermen
were witnesses today. Two of them
were said to be men whose names were,
on the alleged "black list” kept by the
trust.

OWLS CLUB TO GIVE
THIRD WEEKLY BALL
The Atlanta Owls club will hold their
third weekly ball Wednesday night at
the club. Mitchell and Forsyth-sts. Al
ready a large number of tickets have
been sold for the occasion and the event
promises to surpass all former balls
given by the club. T. P. Holland, chair
man of the amusement committee, and
J. B. Everett, secretary or tho club, are

Chicago, June 14,—So far as tho Chi
cago Board of Trade is concerned there
waa no "conter” In May wheat. Di
rectors of the board have accepted the
report of a special Committee which
has been Investigating the recent deal
In which -A. J. Llehtstern and J. Ogden
Armour are said, to have squeesed the
shorts to a finish.
The committee spent three weeks In
Investigating the details bf the May
deal. The committee found that the
big line of wheat taken on by Armour
and Llehtstern was bought at s higher
price than obtained during May, save In
the last part, and’that therefore they
could not’ sell at s profit. The bosr-1
upholds the operators for holding on to
their lines.
HIGHWAY TO RINGGOLD

The blase was discovered by a pass
erby at 1:32 o'clock, who saw ths glare

windows. The alarm was turned in al
most Instantly and when the fire de
partment arrived a small area of the
first floor at the rear was a mass of
flames. '
After a short fight, ths fire was ex
tinguished at 0 o'clock. While no di
rect cause was assigned to the origin of
ths blase, It Is thought that it waa .due
to defective wiring. A series of wires
pass thru the cloak room at the rear uf
the store.
L. J. Daniel said Wednesday morning
at It would be impossible to say Just
how soon the store would be open for
business, but ht did not expect that It
would be closed longer than a few days.
While unable to exactly atate his loss,
he fixed the damage at 110,900 as a
rough estimate. •

ANOTHER PLAGUE SHIP
ARRIVES AT NEW YORK
New York, June 14.—The Italian
Steamship Europa arrived In port to
day with a cholera victim, this being
the second esse of cholera tn arrive
here within 21 hours. Eight hundred
and thirty-six steerage passengers who'
had arrived on board the liner Berlin)
yesterday, were being held at HofTman
Island leday as a result of a death from
cholera on that vessel, and at Quaran
tine today It waa said that they would
be reinforced by the 3(3 steerage pas
sengers who came In on the Europa.
