children of Xarctl did secretly things
that were not right against the
Lord their Clod, and they built them high

of the watchmen to the fenced city. (10)
And they set them up pillars and Asherlm
upon every high hill, and under every

were round about them, concerning whom
the Lord had charged them that they
should not do liko them. (18)- And they

Therefore, the Lord was very angry with
Israel, and removed them out of his sight;
there was none left but the tribe of Judah

The Story.
lionhea seized the throne of Isncl by
tho murder of Pekah, and reigned tor nlno
years. In the history we have no de
railed aocouht of hia doings. It* Is .said
that he did that which was evil, but not
as the kings of Israel before him. The na
tion was, however, corrupt, and a weak
,iutn was necessarily swept along by
powerfully running currents of evil. It
■wilt he remembered that at the- com
mencement of the reign of Jehu "the
Lord began to cut Isr*l short” (II Kings
-*V3*8L The process had continued, and
was now about te be completed. Shal
maneaer, the king ot Assyria, came up
against the northern kingdom and Hoshea
became his vassal, and paid trlbuta to
him. How long this continued ws are
not told, but subsequently he sought the
help of Egypt In the hope of eecaping from
Assyria, and ceased paying tribute.
That politically wa^the last and Anal
mistake. The king of Assyria Immediate
ly besieged the capital. As jre saw In a
previous lesson, when Omrl made Samaria
the capital of the northern kingdom, his
action was characterised by great politi
cal sagacity, because the situation of the
city made It very difficult to ovorcome.
This is borne out by the fact that the
final siege lasted for three years. During
this period. In nil probability Shalmane
ser died, and was succeeded by Bargon.
during whose reign hver Assyria Israel
was conquered, and led away Into captiv
ity.
The greater pert of our lesson Is occu
pied by a careful statement of the his
torian as to the reasons of this final de
feat and scattering of the northern king
dom. He gives three reasons which cover
( the history of the people from the escape
from Egypt from under the hand of
Pharaoh to this going down Into captiv
ity into Assyria under the hand of Sargon.
The first is that when they were thus
brought out of Egypt they turned to Idol
worship, .first secretly, and then publicly
by the building of high places.
The Second reaaon has to do more ex
clusively with IsrssI Itself, and Is that of
the political accommodation of worship by
Jeroboam in his establishment of the
golden calves at Dan and Bethel.
The third Is that of the worship of Baal
Introduced by Ahab, wlth^all the abomi
nations consequent thereupon.
Moreover this continuity In sin was In
spite of the testimony of prophets and
seers by whom Jehovah had constantly
called them to return to Htmseir while
"they would not hear, but hardened their
neck, like to the neck of their fathers.
EX-SENATO& N. W. ALDRICH.
He may be called to give testimony
before the Lorlmer Investigating com
mittee of the senate. Indications are
that there will be insistence by some
of the members of the committee that
Aldrich be heard. It will be recalled
that, In the testimony given before the
committee of the Illinois senate, the
names of Senators Aldrich and Penrose
and President Taft were dragged into
the case by Edward Hines. Hines .said
that not only Aldrich and Penrose were
desirous of the election of Lorlmer, but
also represented the president as fa
voring him. This drew a denial of con-
slderable heat from the white house.
Powsr Company Wants Franchise,
Dalton, Ga., June 15.—The Georgia
Power Company will ask for a franchise
to bring Its lines Into this city, ac
cording to a statement made Wednes
day by J. F. Joerlssen, of Atlanta, a
representative of the company, who
was here to look Into local conditions.
The line to run into Dalton will be
brought from Atlanta by way of Ma
rietta. Cartersvflle and Calhoun.
A CONSTANT ITCH!
who believed not in the Lord thslr Ood.'
At last, on account of this persistence
In sin. He "removed them out of His
sight.”
The Teaching.
Thus ended the northern kingdom as to
national consciousness and constitution
and we are constrained to Inquire, where
did tkp movement actually begin which
ended’in such dire disaster? Immediately,
with Jeroboam, In the hour in which, for
political purposes, he corrupted the wor
ship of Jehovah. Yet does not such a
statement drive us farther back and bid
us remember the unutterable folly of Sol
omon, thru which the one kingdom was
sown with the seeds of discord? And
again, does that not make us Inquire as
to how far the character of Solomon was
the outcome of the sin and weakness of
David? And yet again, was not David's
position as a king in Itself out of harmony
with the first divine Intention, and did not
the movement begin when the people
clamored around Samuel, and said: "Make
us a king to Judgo us like all the na
tlorfl|?“ Yet once again, did not this very
request of the people grow out of the fact
that the sons of Samuel were perverting
I Judgment?
• This series of questions Is only asked
In order that our observations of the de
terloratlon and ultimate disaster of the
kingdom may remind us of the awfulness
of sin which Inevitably worked tself out to
harvest, and of the Impossibility of laying
the blame ultimately anywhere other than
upon the sinful nature of man. The his
tory Is an appalling revelation of the cor
ruption of human nature.
Yet, as we look back, two things are
supremely Impressive—those, namely, of
the patience of Jehovah, and of the sure-
nese of His Judgment upon sin. A little
later In the history Habakkuk cried out:
"O Lord, keep alive thy work In the midst
of the years.
In the midst of the years make It known;
In wrath remember mercy.”
And that is exactly what Jehovah was
constantly doing.
The Golden Text.
It Is a suggestive and significant thing
that the golden text should be chosen
from the Proverbs of Solomon. What a
commentary, the history 'ot his people af
fords of the truth of the awful words!
That statement covers the whole national
history, and Is the epitaph of every per
sistently sinning king throughout the
course thereof.
The nation and the kings were Indeed
often reproved by the messages of the
prophets, by the calamltlee that overtook
them, and by the Infinite patience of Je
hovah as He returned to help them la
hours of their apparent penitence. Nev-
erthelees they as often hardened their
neck and persisted In courses of rebellion
until at last, suddenly, they were broken,
and without remedy carried away Into
captivity and forgetfulnem, front which
they have never emerged.
The same lesson is Illustrated In all hu
man history, and by the constant happen
ings of our own day. With what Incredi
ble slowness we learn of the fundamental
of life!
