ATLANTAN NOW HEADS CIRCULATION MANAGERS Chicago, Juno 16.—John D. Simmons, of The Atlanta Journal, was elected president of the Circulating Managers association at the closing (tension of the organisation's annual convention at tho Hotel LaSalle here. Ther«* was no contest In the election, Mr. Simmons* name being, the only one presented for tho position. Ip n con test for the 'next convention seat, how ever, Atlanta was defeated by Balti more with a vote of 52 to 15. Other officers elected were: First vice president, William J. Little. Mon treal Star; second vice president, Sid ney Long, Wichita Eagle; aecretary- treosuror, J. R. Taylor, Grand Rapids Press (rc-elected). Chiff Jones Goes to Roms, Macon, Ga. # Juno 16.—Fire Chief Jones, or the local fire department left last* night for Rome, where he Is at tending the annual convention of the state chiefs. Chief Jones will deliver an address on the Introduction of civil service In the fire departments of tho principal cities of the state. Will Be Present at the Celebra tion of President’s Sil ver Wedding. Millbury, Mass.. Juna 16.—"Aunt" De ■la Torray leave, here tonight to attend Nephew Will's allvcr wedding at the white house. Aunt Della Is Miss Della C. Torrey. the president's favorite aunt, and maker of his toothsome apple plea. When arrangemente were made for the allver wedding a special Invitation waa sent to Aunt Della. She was told that her presence was necessary to complete the family reunion. Aunt Della safe! aho couldn't go; that ahe was too busy, and that her garden needed particular attention Just now and that ahe never could leav'e her home to go away to Washington, not even for Nephew Will’* silver wedding. Aunt Della, however, has changed her mind. Today Robert Taft, her grandnephew, arrived to eacort her to Washington. They will start at 6:16 o'clock tonight over the New Haven line to Providence and thence by the Federal express to Washington. SHORTAGE OF $5,000 IS CHARGED TO SAVANNAHIAN Savannah, Qa., Juna 16,—George F. Balmer, district manager pf the Port land Cement Company and president of the Savannah Motorcycle club, has been arrested and committed to Jail on a charge of larceny after trust. Five thousand dollars Is said to be the amount of the shortage. The arrest was made In the offices of the com pa' ny. Immediately following BaJmer’s re' turn from New York, where he had been called to an accounting. It Is said that ho admitted the shortage. Balmer himself will not discuss the case. Fall Ing to give bonds In sufficient sum to cover the shortage, he was locked up. Balmer came to Savannah three years ago to take charge of this territory, which extends as far north as Vir ginia He had previously been a sales man for the company In New York state. He It a man of family. M. M. Hunter, manager of the Pittsburg dlS' trlct, has assumed temporary manage' ment of this district. EMORY SUMMER SCHOOL WILL 0PENJJN TUESDAY Emory Collsgs, Oxford, Ga>, June 16, The Emory Summer school will open next Tuesday morning and will last for seven woeks. Dr. E. K. Turner, professor of Latin In Emory, will bo principal of the school. Dr. Turner will be assisted In his work by Professor Nolan Goodyear, principal of the sub-freshtnnn depart ment Of Emory, and Professor Doug, Ins Rumble, associate professor of mathematics. ILLINOIS SENATE PASSES A DEEP WATERWAY BILL 8pringfisld, III., Juns 16.—The Illinois senat? at a session nt 2 o’clock this morning passed the deep waterway bill, for which the special session of ths leg. Islature was called. The measure was sent directly to the senate. This Is the first real step toward a lakes to the gulf" waterway, which has agitated the middle west lor more than three years. O’Shleldt, who has figured more or less prominently In the differ' ent courts of the city and county, la made tho defendant In another suit which was filed Thursday by his wife. There Is pending a suit for divorce be tween O’Shields and his wife, and the matter of temporary alimony has been settled. But this new petition seeks to restrain O'Shields from disposing of certain property, which, his wife claims. Is owned Jointly, until after a final hearing on the divorce and permanent alimony cases Is had. In her petition, Mrs. O’Shlelds de clares that she has worked hard to help accumulate the property which is In her husband's name, frequently doing hard manual labor. She further says she has turned over to him certain property which she received from her mother, and that all nf this he has and, she Is Informed, proposes to sell or transfer. She further charges that she was fraudulently Induced by an agent of a legal firm to sign away her rights to temporary alimony, on Information by this agent that unless she did, she would get nothing nt all. The esca pades between O'Shields and Mrs. Mnud Jnckson, which were aired In the crim inal courts, are also mentioned In this petition. Judge Pendleton signed a temporary restmining order and will hear argument In the case Saturday. STANDARD OIL COMPANY NURSES A BLACK EYE Topeka, Kana, June 16^—The Stand ard Oil Company today Is ruefully con templating another black eye as a re sult of the dejtalon of the stnte su preme court, which prohibits three subv sldlary concerns of the company from doing business In the state to atlfle competition. The defendant companies are the Standard Oil Company, of Kansan; Standard Oil Company, of Indiana, and the Prairie OH and Gas Company.
