Advice
From
TURKEY RAISING IS PROFITABLE.
When we con-
atder the good
price, obtained for
turkey, at the
holiday season, It
la eurptialng that
more farmers do
not raise them.
Many do not keep a/.-
turkey, because of LHC
their Inclination to
wander from home /~j »
and perhaps be- I^OUltrV
cause of their de- jr
termination to live ^
upon their neigh- ./ Inrtnf
hot's bounteous "* LUf
crop,. To wander
la one of the Inatlncta of the wild bird
from which the domestic turkey Is de
scended, which has not been bred out
of the tame fowL Turkeys thnt are
real turkeys wlu always dander. If
they are managed properly there will
not be such a tendency to wander,
they are fed regularly at regular places
around the barns and other buildings
they will not get away so far that they
can not return In time for the regular
meal. Turkeys love Insect life, and
when this la abundant they enjoy the
wood, and meadows.
As a rule, turkeys do little harm to
growing grain; In fact, by picking the
Insect life they destroy the enemies of
plant life, unless the flock of turkeys
Is so large that the grain la trampled
down or the green shoots are eaten by
them. Turkeys keep In much better
health when they are permitted to wan
der over the fields, woods and high
ways, and they pick up a very large
portion of their food. They do not do
well In conflnemenL Their nature Is
wild and they must have freedom
Turkeys are probably the choicest
fowl, that can be taken to market and
bring the highest price. Of all fowls,
perhaps the turkey requires the most
care and attontloji during the first few
weeks following Incubation. But they
are not "hard to raise" If you ones
learn ths sccrcL The young birds ore
delicate, and very susceptible to chang
lng weather conditions. They must be
protected. Rainy or foggy weather Is
especially fatal to them.
Lice and overfeeding kill more young
turkeys than all other causes combined
They are vary susceptible to liver
trouble, or, In other words, if overfed
too much work Is thrown upon the liv
er, which results In a diseased condi
tion of that organ. If you are losing
turkeys, hold a post-mortem examine
tlon of their bodies, and In nine rases
out of (en you will find the liver blotch,
ed In appearance and covered with yel
low spots. We know of some turkey
raisers who use calomel tablets, which
give them relief It used In time. This
condition of the liver Is nothing more
than what la tormod "blackhead" In
older birds.
Feed the little poults often and only
a little at a time. See to It that they
are always protected from the cold
and rain. A young turkey Is Instinct
ively an Ignorant thing, rushes head
long Into danger, and seldom knows
enough to get clear of an approaching
storm or to come In when It rains. Al
ways ksep them well supplied with grit
and water. The first week or two feed
bread crumbs that have been slightly
molstsned In water or milk. Then grad
ually work cottage cheese Into the bill
of fan. Turkeys an seed-aatsra and
bug-eaters. As they grow older let the
mother bird run with them thru the
grass to they may learn where the best
feeding grounds an. As the summer
season progresses. Induce them to come
home to roost by scattering some
tempting grain around the farm build
Inga at night. No other fowls will for.
age as well aJ turkeys thru the sum
mer and autumn and transform Insects
and weed seeds Into ths most tender
and best flavored flesh. Many people
think that a turkey will eat moro than
a hog and la therefore unprofitable.
This Is not true. During the summer
they pick their own food. The cost of
raising a turkey Is less than that of
raising a chicken, and a turkey weighs
more and sella for more per pound.
