• Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Gabbett, the
woman who originated and designed
the Confederate cross of honor.
early Sunday morning on her 78th
birthday at her home In Bedford place,
where she lived alone save for a com
panlon and a servant. At the time of
her death Mrs. M. B. Hill, of Rome,
her cousin, was with her, having been
summoned four weeks ago from a visit
to Kentucky.
Mrs. Gabbett wag the widow of a
Confederate ^soldier and did probably
more than any'other woman to keep
alive the glory of the loat cause: After
her return*-from Europj*. in 1896 she
made her honte In Atlanta and set to
work to commepiorat*'. the glory pf
cause for which her husband, an Irish
nobleman, had given four years of
service.
Wrapped In the glories of the past,
she seemed to care little for the out*
aide work of today, and rarely mingled
with outsiders, except when some mat
ter pertaining to the good of the Con
federate veterans came up.
Mrs. Gabbett was the oldest and only
surviving daughter of the late Dr.
Cosmo P. Richardson, the last of
distinguished Georgia family, which
had been prominent In state affairs
since Revolutionary days.
Hhe was born In Savannah In 1833
at the beautiful home of her parents In
Weat Broad-*t.. which waa burned dur
ing the war. Her mother, who was
Miss Margaret Halley, of Hancock
county, died sfton after the birth of her
daughter. After the death of her father
1n 1862, she married William G
son of Lord Gabbett. of Ireland. After
spending some years'in his native land,
they came to this country just before
,the outbreak of the civil war. Mr.
TJabbett entered the.Confederate forces
a captain In-the engineering corp*
and served with distinction through
out the four years.
A short time after the war Lord
zhbett died In Ireland, and William
Gabbett. being-the. eldest son. succeed
ed to his titles and estate. He and his
wife then returned to Ireland, where he
died during the early nineties as the
result of a sunstroke received In the
Confederate army.
After traveling thru Europe. Mrs.
Gabbett came back to America and in
terested herself In the work of ' the
ters of the Confedcracj-. She
then designed the crosses of honor W
the Confederate veterans and bestowed
many of them.
In her later life Mrs. Gabbett, who
dropped the title of "Lady Gabbett"
after returning to this country, was an
inveterate collector of rare curios. Her
house In Bedford place Is filled with
ran* pictures, handsome silverware and
many yards of exquisite old Irish lace.
One or her hobbles was dogs, and she
was nearly always accompanied hy one
when she caipe down town. In her
back yard she had a large kennel where
she kept and cared for numerous non
descript curs of the street as carefully
as she did for the dozen blooded speci
mens of which she was so fond.
