Weak Cables and Flattering
Crop Prospects Cause
of the Slump.
New York. July 10.—In a wild opening
of the cotton market today Initial prlqes
came out from 12 to 28 point* lower. Re
ports of rainfall throughout the belt, to-
R ther with weak cables, had the market
neycombed with stop-loss orders, and
these were uncovered in largo quantities.
Wire houses told heavily, and the opening
call was far beyond the usual time by
the volume of the trade. Many of the
offerings were taken by big short Inter-
eata and soon after the call there was a
rally of from 7 to 9 points. Futures and
spot were easy In the Liverpool market.
Cotton from the opening has been weak
and demoralized. The decline has been
severe, and Is the result of the opinion
of a majority of people that the general

At the dose the market was steady at
a small rally from the low levels, leaving
prices 07 to 41 points lower as compared
to Monday's final quotations.

but we doubt much whether any liquida
tion of Importance will be secured, and
It seems probable that another attack
may be followed by a sharp recovery on
account of the good technical condition of
stock market today, while

to the general upward trend, declining 1
point. Practically all of the leading rail

Washington, July 10.—Cool
prevailed over greater portion of the l., -
ton growing states. Mean temperatures
were below normal, except over the ex
treme western portions of the cotton
regions, where temperature was about
normal or slightly above. The greatest
deficiency In temperature wa* 3 degrees
at Galveston, Birmingham and Augusta,
and the greatest excess was 2 degrees at
San Antonio. Mean temperatures ranged
Rio, Texas.
Precipitation occurred generally
throughout the cotton growing states, but
several localities, and there was less than
half an Inch over, the weatern portion of
east Texaa. More than 2 inches of rain
fell over considerable areas, and there waa
more than 4 Inches at a few station* in
Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama. Florida
and Georgia. The greatest weekly rainfall
was 7.40 at Tallapooaa, Ga.

Chicago Inter-Ocean: A good many lo-
cal wheat traders were more friendly to
the long side on all breaks, ss price* ara
on an export basis. The spring wheat
crop Is not made, and there are too many
reports of black rust coming in to mak*
the short side safe for the time being.
