the following description of Ita origin:
poultry- In 1890 I had tho pleasure cf
■thru a small village where 1 noticed
chickens of various Colors, l saw one
1 had never seen N forc. I wns ao much
Impressed with their appearance that
In 1891. when I returned to this country.
fowls that would resemble the birds I
saw In Italy.
'1 started by making crosses of
‘Barred Rocks, Light Brahmas. Java*
and Brown Leghorns. After I had
crossed these birds for two rears. I
'picked out the ones which were the
nearest to my Ideal color and bred them
, together. With their offspring I crossed
some Buff Plymouth-Rocks and Single
Comb Rhode Island Reds. I used these
crosses tor several years. Until aboutl
•three years ago I raised over 400. The.
birds were thea coming quite true to
ttyps and the lint year I selected 250.
.getting some fine pens from among
them that ware quite true to type.
"These fouls quite early assumed the
type of ths Plymouth Rook, having
. Plymouth Rock weight and aljapa and
J fine yellow legs. They not only mature
early, but are rapid layers and better
i layers than any Plymouth Rocks 1 ever
owned. The eggs sre large and brown
shelled. The skin of this variety Is rich
yellow, so that they make good table
fowl.
"These chickens when first hatched
have a rich red color and resemble a
S nail, hence I have named them the
uaU Plymouth Rooks
"The plumage of the female Is very
; attractive, the breast being on the pen
ciled or partridge order, with the ex
ception of the ground color, wblch Is a
beautiful buff with a dark brown pen
ciling conforming to the shape of the
feather. The birds ar* well penciled
with the same color on the body and
fluff, even down otr the thighs. The
I back color Is of the partridge or pen
1 died type, but considerably darker than
the breast, body and wing bows. The
wing bows are penciled the same ns the
breast, and the hackle shews a tenden
cy that way. Th* color I* a beautiful
buff, slightly sprinkled, or one ntlght
say very slightly penciled with brown.
‘The male bird, while eonvwhat re
sembling ths partridge nr penciled va
rieties of other breeds, shows more red
In Its plumage. The hackle Is a bright
brilliant red, showing a tendency to a
black atrlpe running down the center
i of each feather, altho It does not show
much on the surface. The saddle feath-
jers are black, having red centers, being
• somewhat open and we might say laced
| like the Golden Wyandotte. The breast
'.feather* are red with a dark strip*
jdown the center, which gives each
feather a laced appearance Body and
fluff are black, peppered with red.
