The long fight of the women lawyers for the right to practice in Georgia fa drawing to a c|o«e. This week will see the lower house, upon recommendation of Its Judiciary committee, consider the Beck bill, which, places women lawyer* on the same footing with men. Monday afternoon the members of the general Judiciary committee exhlb Itcd a change of front and the men who two weeks ago voted the measure down In committee only to have their action repudiated by the house, this time fa vored the measure. Only one vote was cast against recommending the Beck bill. The fate of the bill In the house Is problematical, but the (lopping of the committee put* the friends of the meas ure In the most sanguine frame of mind. It Is freely predicted that the bill will pass, but by a close vote. The fight to atlow women to practice law ill Georgia was precipitated a month ago when Mrs. Minnie Hale, a graduate of the Atlanta Law* school, the first woman to be graduated In law In the history of Georgia, applied to Judge Pendleton, of the superior court, for a license to practice law. Because the law prescribes that only men may prac. tlce law In Georgia* she was refused. Then the light was transferred to the legislature. The Beck bill waa voted down by the general Judiciary commit tee So. 1. hut the house repudiated the committee's decision and sent the measure back for reconsideration. Hamilton Douglaa, dean of the At lanta Isiiw achool; Mrs. Douglas, his wife, who waa formerly a practicing attorney in another state; Mr*. «*. Weaver, who will be graduated from the Atlanta Law school In a year, and Mr. Beck, of Brooks, author of the bill, all spoke in It* favor. Mrs. Weaver quoted the United States constitution to the committee, showing that an attempt to keep wom en from practicing law In Georgia was denying their rights as citizen* and classing them with Indians and aliens.
