■WHAT IB A SHOW SPECIMEN?
A ahow •pact-
men la a bird that A J '
by lagtumate con- /\dVtC6
dldonlng can be
made an exhibi
tion specimen.
The exhibition
makes an unnat
ural environment
for the fowls. Tou
never saw a bird
In an exhibition
that stood In *
natural poise as
seen upon his or
her own yard.
I have neon r
Dark Brahma male
that at home one would bet every dol
lar oonld win In the hottest competition.
One such bird the late Philander Wil
liams owned. Ho showed him throe
times and the bird never got a place
when be naturally and at home was a
better bird than those placed over him.
Wa may think we are showing our
birds In their natural condition, but the
moment they get Into an axhlbltlon
everything Is to different and unnatural
to them that they will not appear as
they do at hone.
Judges that know their business know
this and make allowance fur the draw
ing up of the muscles of breast and
body, and tbe lifting of the plumage
from fear.
Fake as much as you choose, you can
not make a specimen appear as perfect
as on Its own walk at home.
Tho worst trouble In exhibiting Is the
crankiness of many Judges to freese on
to some minute defect and magnify It
Into an aggravated defect and oven a
disqualification. The standard was
made to protect real excellence, not to
destroy the chances of a strictly first-
class specimen es a breeder, when to
apply a disqualification Is an apparent
unjust discarding of a worthy apeolmen.
The sot Is as much In opposition to the
standard as any defect, for the standard
has taught you for a* years that In such
cases the specimen must have the ben
efit and not be condemned.
The disqualifications may be feathers
upon the shanks, and even down be
tween the toes. One fiber of down might
appear that might havs remained there
from tta chlckenhood. To disqualify la
not giving ths specimen the benefit of
the doubt nor la It protecting a worthy
specimen to disqualify. To aay a single
down fiber Is of as mucb consequence
as to disqualify 25 points of excellence
otherwise Is the height of folly. An
honest Judge would protect such a
specimen by removing the minute cause
and allow tha bird to win. and the
standard In Its law would back him up.
I do not believe In any disqualifica
tions. I believe that the standard Is
the law, and each and every defect ar.d
oondltlon that Is different than stand
ard found becomes a cause to cut a
reasonable par cent and when a specl-
ment scores II or less that such speci
men should be condemned as unworthy
a prise or position In a breeding pen,
thus condemning them to tha kltchan
uses of th« country.
My brother breeder, would you think
of shipping a bird that soored leas than
SI to any patront No.
First-class breeding demands that
specimens that score It and upward as
fowls and 90 to 91 for phtekena In their
first year ahould grace the breeding
pen. But It you had a hen that scored
95, bnt bad a small fleck of white In her
ear you would bleed her, would you
notT I would cut the white out and
breed her. For I have this experience
to back such a oondltlon. A Rock cock
erel that got a score of II 1-1 had while
earlobes. I gave him ether and skinned
the lobes, then bred him and did not get
a single chicken with a white ear. A*
a cock he won at the Boston show.
I disqualified a Light Brahma for a
wry tall for a friend of mine. I after
ward cured the wry tall so the bird was
never beaten afterward. Is that fak
ing? If you have your child's eyes
straightened by a surgical operation,
will you call It faking?
Any legitimate means that can cor
rect a defect and leave the bird a first-
class breeder le not faking in my mind.
Cali It what wm ills, L K. FSIch will
do all that will save s first-class speci
men from ths block as dead poultry.
ROUP. *
Roup—Discharges' at nostrils and
mouth, frothy or running eyea swelled
head, offensive breath, dlphtherotlc
patches In the throat, difficult breathing
and swallowing, loss of sight and ex
haustion are seme uf the signs of this
scourge of poultry. It attacks fowls es
pecially when they are weakened by
parasites, by having caught cold, by
catarrh and Influensa. It la particu
larly liable to attack fowls when they
are exposed to extremes of hest and
eold. dampness, foul sir. filthiness and
neglect.
It Is only In the early stages of this
sickening disorder that treatment has
any value. If a fowl catchsa cold or
•howe any of ths symptoms Indicated,
Immerse Its head In kerosene oil tor a
moment. A mixture of keroeene and
olive OIL half and halt Is Ibss harsh In
Its affect upon the eyea This mixture
may be Injected by means of an oil
dropper or syrtnger Into the nostrils
and mouth. Peroxide of hydrogen and
water, half and half, may be used In
the same manner.
Creolln or carbolic arid In one per
cent solutions may be used In like man
ner.
Any of these liquids will help lo clear
the nasal and throat passages and de
stroy disease germs.
Keep the roupy foal tn a comfortable
place away from the healthy fowls of
the flock.
Feed raw egga or bread snaked In
milk or beef tea. If the eyea are af
fected. II may he necessary to t force
