Among tbeee
feeds there !■ no
grain that Is so J lnrfnr
valuable as sun-
flower seeds, when
properly fed. Sunflowers are as easy
to grow os com. In fact eaaler, for a
aunflower which baa got a start will
grow In aplte of weeds and make a
good big head filled with seeds very
rich In oil. Any poultryman who has a
bit of ground to spare can grow sun-
flower seeds for hla fowls, and when
these are fed to molting fowls In the
fall or laying hens In the winter they
will go far toward paying two prices
for all they cost They should bo plant
ed In rows four feet apart and about
eighteen Inches apart In the rows.
Millet Is another grain feed that la
very valuable for poultry. It mokes an
ideal feed for little chicks and Is about
the best thing as a combination of lit
ter and feed that we ever used. Millet
may be sown almost any time up to the
middle of June and will mature before
frost comes. We have grown a big
crop of millet which was sowed the last
day of June. (We prefer the Japanese
millet for this' purpose, as It has very
largo seeds.) The crop was cut Just
as the seeds were In the milk, or a lit
tle later, and cured In the field os hay
Is cured. II waa then put In the bam
and fed without threshing, the straw
making a good litter for the poultry
house floor and the seeds a good feed
for the hens. The seed that shattered
In handling It in the winter was saved
for tho chicks In the spring.
Kaffir com grows wherever ordinary
corn will grow and In many places
where It will not thrive well. This
grain Is between oats and com In nu
tritive value and Is a cheap and valua
ble feed for all kinds of poultry. In
many ports of the country great quan
tities of sorghum are grown. Usually
tha seed Is wasted by being left on the
ground where the crop was grown. This
seed Is a fine poultry feed and chicks
or older poultry, do well on It. These
hints will bo of value if followed by
those who have on opportunity to ee
cure a greatsr variety of feed by grow
