Southern Female College.
LaGrenge, Ga., Sept. 8.—For the six
ty-ninth school year the Southern Fe
male college opened Thursday, with a
total enrollment of close to 100 stu
dents. The opening ceremonies were

Baptists, among whom were Rev. Dr.
J. 9. Hartaway, pastor of Central Bap
tist church, Newnan. Os., who deliver
ed the principal address of the occa
sion, and Hon. fL W. Hunt, of Decatur,

around Atlanta. During the years the
Georgian has held that office, alncs 1106,
he has worked Incessantly for the. wel
fare of the farmer and for Georgia. Aa
a member of President Roosevelt's
country life commission he brought the
name of Georgia before the entire noun-
try, nnd ln this movement he proved
the prime worker.
Mr. Barrett waa born on a farm In
Pike county, January 36, 13*6. He’was
educated In the country schools and ln
colleges In Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana.
Upon hit return to Georgia he settled
In Pike county, where In 1611 he mar
ried M1m Alma Rucker They have live
children, Paul, Charles, Howell, Ledan,
and Gaines.
He Joined the Farmers alliance short
ly after returning to Georgia and was
twice elected president of the Georgia
division of the Farmer* union. In 1106
ho was elected president of the national
union and ln each succeeding eleotlon
has been sent back to tha chair. ■
Despite his prominence In Pike coun
ty and ths state, Mr. Barrett has never
held political office, preferring to keep

THREATENING LETTERS

Walton County Citizens Are
Told to “Get Rid of All
Niggers.”
Oxford, Sept. 8.—Parmer*
Walton county, juet north of this place,
are receiving: threatening- letters every
day from some unknown person or per
sons. The letters come two and three
at a time and nearly all of them say:
"We hereby notify you to get rid of
all niggers on ypur place."
One of them threatened to burn the
house of the recipient If he did -not
comply with Instructions. The epistles
bear the postmark of the Atlanta and
Augusta railway postofflee.
Residents of Walton county are
greatly agitated over the matter.
Is supposed the epistles are written by
persona who dislike negroes or those
whose hatred was stirred by the recent
lynching In that county.

Chinese soldiers are marching to de
fend American and other foreign mis

The Methodist mission compound at
Cheng-Tu has been fortified and for
eigners are housed there, but provi
sions are running short and starvation
threatens them. —

made short cruises up tho Yang-Tie-
Klang rlvar from here todhy nnd re
ported upon their return that the flood
extended for miles on both sides of the
natural river bed and that the dikes are
covered or washed away.

SUNDAY TO END SEASON
OF PIEDMONT BATHING
The park board decided at Its'ses
sion Thursday afternoon to discontinue
the swimming privileges at Piedmont
park Sunday afternoon. As the weath
er will soon be toe oool for bathing,
members of the board derided It was
best to Issue an official order stopping
tho swimming to remove the danger of
children being drowned when there was
no life-saver at the lake.
Bathing at tha lake has been the most
popular sport Atlantans have ever on-
loyed. Thousands have been visit
ors there very day since the swimming
began. And next year the plan Is to
enlarge the facilities at Piedmont park,
have a bathing pool at Grant park, Joy.

VALDOSTA WILL HAVE TWO

look like Valdosta will.have two street
car companies, unless there Is a mergqr
of the old company with a 'proposed
new one which Is asking for a franchise
here.
At the meeting of the city council
yesterday Colonel George L. Patterson,
representing local Interests, appeared
before the body and stated that an ap
plication would be made before the
board at the next meeting for a new
electric railway company: The new
corporation does not propose to traverse

will be laid along.ptner streets of the
city. The new company, it la stated,
will build about four, miles of railway
at once.
Thg Valdosta Street Railway Com
pany, which baa been operating a trol
ley line about two and a half miles long
for a number of years, some lime ago
secured permission from the city coun-
ijt to extend Its line .and form a belt
around the city, but nd further action
has been taken.
Revival at Dublin.
Dublin, Ga, Sept. 8.—Revival serv
ices have bean started at the Christian
church In Dublin. Rev. W. A. Fite, of
Paducah. Ky, preached the opening
sermon Sunday morning, and other
ministers will preach during the serv
ice#. The music will be In charge of
