HOW WALTER ANDREWS SAVED
FLAG IN RITUAL OF THE ELKS
Anent the appointment of Welter
P. Andrews, of Atlanta lodge No. 71.
B. P. O. Bike, to be district deputy
grand exalted ruler for north Geor
gia an Interesting story Is related of
how he sprang Into fame at the first
grand lodge
__Jge convention of the Elka
attended, held In Atlantic City laat
July.
Mr. AVidrewa' gift of eloquence, cou
pled with a patriotic tlassage from
the Elks' ritual that would do abun-
(lint credit to any Fourth of July ora
tion, gave, him an Instant and favora
ble Introduction to the 1,100 leaders of
the Elks' fraternity who were assem
bled In the convention hell.
A proposed revision of the Elka' rit
ual waa under discussion and In the
process of elimination of various pas
sages It was suggested that a very
be Included In portions to be aban
doned. This met with more or lees
pretest, but each argument against the
elimination was answered effectively,
end It appeared certain that the flag
eulogy must go. Finally Mr. Andrews,
who hitherto had not been heard In
the convention, secured recognition of
the presiding officer and offered a dra
matic defense of the patriotic speech-
ment which' was In danger of being
relegated to the literary refuse. 'As be
concluded, Williams E. English, of In
dianapolis, a past grand exalted ruler,
declared to Mr. Andrews:.
“I will wager the brother can not re
peat the tribute to the flag."
Instantly Mr. Andrews accepted the
challenge, declaring he could do so. By
this Urns he had aroused a keen Inter
est throughout the convention, and
those who had been Indifferent listen
ers tu the debate relative to the flag
became deeply concerned. With Mr.
Andrews* reply to Mr. English that he
could repeat the passage, cries came
from every part of the hall urging him
to “take the stage." 1
"Let us have It I’
"Go on!" and similar encouragements.
Mr^Andrmva mounted the platform, at
the end of the maWinoth auditorium on
the great steel pier, and In his resonant
and dramatic voice, with all the elo
quence and oratory of which be Is so
capable, he gave a rendition of the
tribute to the Hag the tlkoof which pos
sibly had n.-ver before been hi aril In
an assembly of. Elke. Every word and
every flight of Ills, eloquent Interpre
tation of the- beautiful ritual were
eagerly and appreciatively heard, and
aa he concluded the convention was a
unit of appiaube.
Needless to sqy. when the vote was
taken, the flag passage was retained Id
the ritual, and it wqs universally agreed
that Walter Andrews had saved It. !
Another singular coincidence wa*
that Fred Harper, of Lynchburg, Vai
who presented the report for the ritual
committee, recognized In Mr. Andrews
a friend of former years, they having
beon at Trinity college together, and
had not n)et since their departure from
that Institution perhaps twenty years
ago.
"Who le that fellow r' remarked Fred
Harper to Tom C. Daniels, of Raleigh.
N. C, aa Andrews arose for the first
time In the grand lodge, "I have seen
him somewhere.” continued Mr. Har
per. Studying Mr. Andrews' face a
moment Mr. Daniels replied: "Why,
that'e 'Prep' Andrews. He was at Trin
ity college with you and I." In a few
momenta the trio of colleglane of for
mer days renewed their friendship, and
were doubly kin at Elks.
In the distribution of oldest for the
year 1911-11 just announced by .Grand
Exalted Ruler J. P. Sullivan, of New
Orleans, each of thus gentlemen la re
membered. Mr. Andrews It made dis
trict deputy grand exalted ruler for
north Georgia; Mr. Daniels Is'district
deputy grand exalted ruler for eastern
North Carolina, and Mr. Harper Is
chairman of the committee on work
and ritual.

FAMOUS SHAKING ROCK.
Lexington, Ca., Oet. 8.—The above le
a reproduction of the famous "Shaking
Rock," situated In Oglethorpe county,
just a half mile from this place. It te
on the lands that were owned by Gov
ernor Gilmore, governor of QeorgI
from about 184*1 to 1186, but now own,
by Dr. W. H. Reynolds, of thta city.
This mammoth natural curiosity Is a
source of much wonder to the numerous
tourists that have come from all parte
of the country to view 1L Many are
the theories that have been advanced aa
to the phenomenon, the most reason
able of which Is that It le poised on a
email point of rock jutting out from
the ground, end when gently puehed
will rock to and fro for the apace of
several Inches
The time has been when a child, by
merely touching hie linger tips to the
rock, could cause It to take up Its
swaying motion, but of late years more
power Is obliged to ge put Into the
movement that puts It In motion. It le
thought that the point of rock on which
It oscillates Is gradually being worn
down to the ground, and It le feared
that In time It may lose Re queer pow
er and be only an Inert man of gran
ite as tho many other huge bowlders
that surround It.
The rock is situated at the very
mouth of a chasm that has a sheer
drop of over 100 feet, known as lover’s
leap. The legend told of thle grewsome
spot aays that many years ago an In
dian maid, a Cherokee, was wooed and
won by a pale Dace Invader Into the
dobtains of the red man. Her father,
a great chieftain and a mighty war
rior, discovering this lova affair, se
creted hlmeett behind the "Shaking
Rock." which waa their tryetlng place.
When the happy pair had come aa usual
to whisper words of love the old father
made hie presence known, and from ter
ror the maid threw herself Into the
arms of her lover and together they
went over the precipice and were
dathed to pieces on the rocks below.
It has been estimated by an expert
that the weight of this rock la 17 tone.
Its measurements are eighteen feet
long, t*n feet. wide and flvw feet In
height.
