A very delightful event of Friday
evening was th* party given by Mr.
and Mrs. John Spalding at the home of
their parents. Dr. and Mrs. E. L. Con
nolly, In West End.
Th* affair was a delightful compli
ment to their niece, Miss Van Spald
ing, who will leave next week to spend
the winter at Shorter college, Rom*,
and th* guests Included It of her young
friends.
The sffalr was msrksd by many
novel and amusing feature*, and cele
brated the unlucky day llth of th*
month, which fell upon Friday.
The guests were presented with lit
tle cards ornamented with black cals
and there were It questions regard
ing thirteen well known superstition*.
The boys' prise was a copy of Peter
Stirling, and th* girls' prise a copy
of The Shepherd of the Hills, each of
th* bonks being wrapped end tied with
a mlnature pig. the Irish symbol of
good tuck, bearing a bunch of sham
rock In hi* mouth, thus warding off
the III luck of Friday th* ltth.
The consolation <u a hors* shoe pin
tied with a gold wish bone, and th*
booby prise was a lemon.
Delirious refreshment* were served
during the evening, the table In the
dining room being decorated with giant
fern* and bowls of varl colored 'cos-
mo*.
Throughout th* house there were
many vases of beautiful flowers from
Mr*. Connally's own gardens, and th*
affair waa one of the happiest event*
of th* evening.
Mrs. Spalding was a charming host-
•as, wearing a gown of white Jap
anese silk, handsomely embroidered.
She wss assisted In entertslnlng by
her mother, Mr*. E. L. Connolly, and by ,
Mrs. Louise Spalding Footer.
Mies Spalding, the honor guest, wore
