New York, Oct. 14.—Exceptional
Btrength waa shown In the atock market
at the opening of the short session today,
and there was active dealings In all lm-
portant Issues. Many shares advanced to
the highest figure they have shown In
two weeks. Wabash preferred advanced
a point and the 4 per cent bonds made a
substantial gain.
United States Steel common opened
Arm with an advance of ft. Union Pa
cific, Reading. Consolidated Gas, South
ern Pacific and Northern Pacific gained
ft and an advance of 1ft waa shown In
Canadian Pacific. American Smelting
(more and Ohio 14.
There waa considerable covering.
The curb market opened quiet.
• Americans In London were etrong, altho
the trading was professional. Canadian
Paclflo In London received bullish sup
port.
