tures were from 1 to 6 degrees above
normal, the least excess being over the
middle Texas cnest and the greatest tn
Florida and Oklahoma. The mean tem
perature ranged fmm 24 to 73 degrees
over the eastern, from 44 to 75 over the
central end 46 m 76 degrees over the

Chicago. Oct. 17.—There was m lower
opening In fvheat this morning on In
creased offerings because of a promise of
better weather In the northwest. There
was some fair commission housb buying.
Liverpool came %#%d lower. Broom-
hall attributed the easier tone to specu
lative realising on the bearish crop sum
mary and poor demand for cargoes and
parities.
Despite the reports of frost In the corn
belt prices were only fractionally lower
this morning. Dry, frosty weather Is now
ntlal for the "finishing" of the corn

ing.
Oats were %0%c lower. Commission
houses were fair buyers with the railing
mostly of a realising character.

New York. Oct. 17.—Issues were gener
ally supplied at concessions at the open
ing cf the stock market today, altho Le
high Valley was an exception, opening
with a gain of %. This advance i '
most wiped out by heavy selling. ^

The trading In Steel common at

ing Influence on near!)* all the Industrials
and railroad Issues. Foreign houses were
heavy sellers. Rumors that the United
States government would file papers In
the suit agslnst the steel corporation this
afternoon were also responsible for heavy
selling orders.
Losses of around l point were sustained
In Amalgamated. Union Pacific. Reading
and 8L Paul and fractional declines were
recorded in a number of other Issues.

Pekin, OcL 17,—Fighting between the
advance guard of the revolutionary
army and 1,440 Imperial Chinese troops
protecting the tracks of the Pekin ami
Hankow railway Is reported from Han
Yang.
Admiral Soil, who arrived at Kankow
yesterday with eight Chinese warships,
landed marines today to reinforce the
government forces. The central gov
ernment has begun to take confidence
from the fact that the northern troops
are remaining loyal to the Manchu
dynasty.' So far there haa been little
If any disaffection reported from the
northern provinces.
The government continues to pour
troops Into the south. Eleven transport
trains left the environs of ths capital
today. In addition to soldiers, some of
them had been filled tfp with artillery.
It Is believed the government has com
mandeered all trains for tha movement
of troops.

leyan Missionary society from Han
kow. Rebels are taking every precau
tion to protect foreign missionaries.
