History of the Glidden Tour
Dates Back to the Year igo4
The Glidden tour had Its origin bark
in 1904 when the American Automobile
association held its first annual run,
starting at New York and Boston and
finishing at St. Louis, covering a dis
tance of 1,318 miles from New York,
tt was not until the succeeding year,
however, that Charles J. Glidden first
offered his trophy.
This trophy was offered In 1905 and
1906 to the Individual making the best
score on the tour, but In 1907 the con
ditions for competition for the trophy
were changed so that teams, instead <»f
Individuals, could compete. Each team
was to be composed of several ma
chines, all entrants In a team being
from the same state.
The Glidden trophy was awarded to
Percy P. Pearce, driving a Pierce car.
In 1905, when the tour had Its start and
finish In New York. The Itinerary In
cluded Hartford, Bret ton Woods, Con
cord and Worcester, the distance cov
ered being 871 miles.
In 1906, Percy P. Pearce was again 1
awarded the trophy. The tour started
at Buffalo, ran east thru the principal
cities In central New York, along the
shores of Lake Champlain and across
the border line Into Canada It ran
east from Montreal to Quebec, south
Into Maine and finished at Bretton
Woods, covering 1,135 miles. Paul H.
Doming, chairmaaof the touring board,
offered an additional trophy In this tour
which was awarded to C. W. Kelsey,
who drove a Maxwell.
The First Team Tour.
The tour shifted to the middle West
In 1907, the start being made at Cleve
land, running west to Chicago, thence
east across the states of Indiana, Ohio,
Pennsylvania and Maryland to Balti
more; then to Philadelphia, and across
New Jersey to New York city, which

waa the terminal uf the run. The dla-
tance traveled In thla tour w»a 1,670
mllea. It waa In thla tour that the con
dition* of award of the Olldden trophy
were chunked. It waa won by the Au
tomobile club of Buffalo, whoae team
conalated of two Pierce Arrowa, two
Thomaa Flyera and one Packard.
It waa In thla tour alao that the flrat
Mower trophy waa offered for the run
about finlahlng with the beat acore.
H. K. Bhcrlden. In a White Steamer,
tied for the trophy with O. S. Smith, In
a Stoddard-Dayton, neither receiving a
penalty during the entire run. To de
termine the winner an additional teat
from New York to Iluffalo reaulted In
the White Steamer winning.
For the year 1006 the tour began at
Buffalo and found Ita way aouth tn
Plttaburg. eaat to Philadelphia and
thenre north to Albany, eaat to Boaton,
north to the White mnuntalna and then
aouth to Saratoga, covering 1,670 mllea.
In thla tour the teama were reatrlcted
to three cars and reaulted In a tie be
tween three teama. The No. 1, Buffalo
Automobile club, comprlalng three
Pierce-Arrow care; tho Columbua Au
tomobile club team, of three Peerleaa
cara, and the Chicago Motor club team,
made up of two {laynea cara and one
Oldamoblle, were the three In the tie.
Extra Run Nacaaaary.
To decide the winner of tho trophy It
waa agreed to make an additional run
from Saratoga to Syrncuae to Buffalo
and then over the orlglnnl courae until
all but one team waa eliminated. The
morning following, the Buffalo team
Waa at the atartlng line for the run
off, but the other two teama failed to
■how np and the Buffalo care refuaed
to erflka the lino. The Glidden trophy
waa not awarded to any of the tied
teama but remained In the cuatody of
the American Automobile aaaoclatlon.
The three tied teama were not tho
only conteatanta having good acorea, for
bealdea them were fourteen ears with
perfect acorea for the tour. However,
they were In tonma In which another
car hod been penalized.
Again n Mower trophy waa offered by

Frank B. Mower for the runabout fln-
lahlng with the beat acore. Five of the
fourteen runabouta entered flnlahed
with perfect acorea and a run-off waa
necoaaary to determine the winner.
Leaving Saratoga on July 26, Premier
car No. 104 and the Stoddard-Dayton
cara No. 107 and No. 112 dropped out at
Plttaburg and the two Pierce runabout,
continued to Bedford, reaching there
with perfect acorea. Pierce car No. 100
withdrew at Bedford and Pierce car No,
102 croaaed the line, winning tho trophy.
Again In 1000 the tour atarted In tho
middle Woat, touring Michigan, Minne
sota, Nebraska, Kanaaa, Illinois, Indiana
and Colorado. Leaving Detroit, the
tourlata ran weat to Chicago, then north
to Minneapolis, south to Council Bluffs,
weat to Denver thru Nebraska and east
to Kansas City thru Kanaaa, covering
the greatest mileage of the tour up to
that time—2.637 mllea.
Anothar Change Made.
The Glidden trophy deed of gift waa
again amended so that It might be won
by an Individual, who anall have cuato.
dy of the trophy until It la won by an
other. The chairman of the contest
board, Frank B. Hower, for the third
year gave a trophy to he awarded out
right tn the winner In the runabout
class. The city of Detroit offered a
third trophy to bo competed for by
miniature tonneaus.
The Glidden trophy waa won by a
Pierce Arrow, tho Hower trophy by an
other Pierce Arrow and the Detroit
trophy was won by a Chalmers.
Lnst year's tour was run under grade
2, reliability contest rules for the (Hid
den trophy for touring cara and for the
Chicago trophy for runabouts. Including
miniature tonneaus and double or sin
gle rumbles.
Tho courae of the run waa from Cin
cinnati aouth to Dallas, north thru Ok
lahoma and Kansas to Omaha, then
east across Iowa and Illinois to the fin
ish, at Chicago. The tour waa sixteen
days on the road, covering 2,661 mllea
Thla yoar the tour comes south over
tho natlonnl highway, from New York
to Jacksonville, a distance of 1,460.6
miles. With the start at New York last
Saturday, the tourists made stops at
Philadelphia. Gettysburg, Staunton,
Roanoko, Winston-Salem, Charlotte anl
Anderson, arriving In Atlnnta Saturday.
They will spend Sunday and Monday In
Atlanta sand leave Tuesday morning,
making ,t!xe next atop at Cordele, then
Live OA, . Fla., and Into Jacksonville,
which <x)ntpletes the tour.
Again the rules governing the contest
have been changed by the elimination
of technic; jl details, so as to Invite the
participation of the tourist owning and

in the nrewzsity of arrival on schedule
time at oa ntrols, a sufficient element to
maintain competitive Interest through
out the tour among both teams and In
dividuals. I
Besides tlie Glidden trophy, the city
of AndersorL S. C., has offered a hand
some troph.'f. Thla will be awarded the
Individual jiitrant of a touring car or
runabout W*osc car finishes the tour
with the ’Jeiuit number of penalty points
against It. Who winner of this trophy
must agree to deposit It with the au
tomobile clu'a of which he Is a member
In tho city <ir town from which his en
try la mad,*, or If there be no automo
bile club, tl len with the Board of Trade
or Chambcu- of Commerce of such city

to the American Automobile association
after the expiration of twelve months,
to bo offered ;for competition again.
Cash or plate will be awarded to the
Individual tot'ring car and runabout
winners of ties seven price divisions for
touring cars slnd runabouta, respective,
Award of Prizes.
The awsrfvof these division prizes
will be based only upon the road per
formance of the car, the winner being
the ear covering the route of the tour
with the least; number of points penalty

to Its debit. In the event of tied scores
between twp, or more cars In any di
vision, the It rise assigned to that divi
sion will be divided pro rata.
The cars ar« divided Into the follow
ing classes:
Division 1A>—*$600 and under.
Division 2A--1IS01 to 61.200.
Division 3A—tl,301 to 61.600.
Division 4A--4U.601 to 62,000.
Division 6A—1 2,001 to 63,000.
Division 6A—j 3,001 to 64,000.
Division 7A—$ 4,001 and over.
The following average speeds must

Republican Government Faces

publican government was today threat
ened with the graves t crisis which It

ing broke out, wldi’h held the city in
a grip of terror all night.
Troops patrolled the streets today
and martial law pzaatlcally prevailed.

tion.
Ex-Minister Almeffla was mobbed In
tho streets and narroiviy escaped death.
Ha was rescued by the military guard
and escorted to his humc after he had

national palace and tho mobs were
menaced with bombolnlxnent. The ho*
pltnls were tilled with wounded.
The government whs also faced with
mutiny on the part of tlic royalist sym
pathisers among tho taoldlers In the
barracks. It was decided to resort to
the sternest measures to put down the
uprising.
