New York, Oct. 24.—With cables lower
than due, and with the trade expecting
warmer weather to follow the cold enap
In the South, the cotton market opened
today eaay with prices S to 10 points
lower. Recent buyefa for a reaction were
discouraged by the failure of frost re
ports to create an Investment sentiment
in the market and sold freely. There was
heavy Southern selling and trade seemed
to be looking for a bearish ginning report
tomorrow.
Futures and spot were eaay In Liver
pool.
After a break of 12 to 16 points from
the previous close the market steadied
and advanced 6 to 8 points from the low
levels, with trading less active. There
was some little buying to cover shorts
over the ginning report to be publlr" ^
on the opening Wednesday morning.
The receipts continue on an enormous
scale, the receipts at the porta aggregat
ing 110,412. against 98.543 last year. Re
ceipts at Savannah, 20,498 bales, breaks
6610. points decline from Monday's doe
Ing quotations.

New York, Oct. 24.—An advance of ft
In Reading was the capital feature of the
trading at the opening of the stock mar
ket today. Altho the general tone seemed
firm, trading was narrow and quietness
prevailed In nearly all the Important Is
sues. Price movements were so narrow
as to be hardly worth noticing.
Immaterial fractional gains were made
In Rock Island, International Harvester,
common and preferred both opened
changed. The common yielded ft upon
selling which set in immediately follow
ing the opening. This was attributed to
reports current In Wall Street that the
Steel corporation Is to divest Itself of
Tennessee Coal and Iron holdings follow
ing the announcement of Its determination
to cancel Its Great Northern Ore leases.
Losses were sustained In a few other
of the Industrials.

fessional character, and fluctuations wlth-

U. S. Steel Corporation for the quarter is
entirely overlooked. On weak spots
would be Inclined to buy coalers for a
turn.
Norfolk and Western was strong, and
In. some conservative quarters the stock

moderate recessions with the Intention
of accepting profits on the major por
tion of holdings on the rallies. Occa
sionally we expect to see a drive at some

Washington. Oct. 24.—Precipitation oc-
irred generally over the. cotton region,
except that there, was none In northwest
ern Oklahoma and a few scattered locali
ties Jn Texas. The precipitation waa
generally light, but moderately heavy
amounts occurred over Georgia, the Car
olines, northern Florida, southern Louis
iana, central Alabama and In a few scat
tered localities In Texas. More than 3
inches fell In part* of Alabama, Geor
gia, Florida and the Carolines. The neat
est amount, 6 Inches, fell at Montlcello,
Ga.
Mean temperatures were 1 to 7 degrees
above normal over the eastern, about nor
mal to 4 degrees below normal over the
central and 4 to 8 degrees below normal
over the western portion of the cotton re-
est deficiency over northwestern Texas.
