ehould be ulean enough to be eaten by
human belnge. Mouldy and rotten
feed* often bring disease, or a run
down eondltlon, and tainted feed* ure
likely to taint the egg* and ltc*h.
Jg Green Feed.—The very beet green

Clover I* next to alfalfa In feed value
and the grosses follow. Cabbage In
good. Many poultrymen raise lettuce
Inst for ban feed. Lawn clipping* are
relished. Beeta are relished for a Va
riety. A hen abould have all the green
reed ehe will eat every day of her life.
Meat.—Then hen running around the
farm in the spring hi well supplied with

Ordinarily grain* do not supply suffi

Dried meat meal and dried meat and

hen's body and Is ss essential as feed.
Many well-fed hen* do not lay because
they do not hay# the water necessary In

The water must be clean, pure and
palatable, and within reach of the hen
whenever she want* It. She will not
drink enough If the water le lukewarm

Ice In winter. Infected water. Is ae dan
gerous for hens a* for humans and sa
likely to bring disease.
Ortt.—Grit Is the hen's teeth, and It
quiet be sharp. Often hen* ktpt on
stony places must be fed grit because
the piece* of local stone are so round
ing that they do not grind th* feed well.
I.tme.—The egg shell I* nearly pure
carbonate of lime, and lime Is found In
moat of the tissues of the body. It ft
as absolutely necessary to ths hen as
dr or food. Crushed oyster shells

A hen needs about four pounds a year.
In some sections limestone can be used
to supply both grit and lime.
Exercise.—A laying hen Is always a
working hen. The beet layers are al
ways active, and If their feed I* given
to them eo that they can eat It wllhout
exercise, they have to exercise In some
way and pull each others' feather*, get
frightened and fly across the pen at
every little noise, or tty to fly out.
Feed should be given so that th* hen*
will have to work live to eight hours
every day t«f gel their All. tiraln may
be scattered thinly In a deep utter, it
may be fed unthreshed, compelling the
hens to scratch It off. Head* of cab

will have to work hard to pick It off.
