New York, Nov. 4.—-As a consequence
M disappointing cables the cotton market
opened steady today with a decline of
from 1 to 6 points. Wall Street was a
moderate seller, but prices held steady
at the slight opening decline In the first
hour.

The Saturday short session on the cot
ton exchange was very dull, but quiet.
There was very little outside business,
trading being confined chiefly to the ring
crowd. Fluctuations were narrow, with
the close steady 2 to 6 points below the
finals of Friday. . ♦

our markets, steady and inactive. Thr
trade is apparently watching the moves
to bring about a general holding raoveT
ment in the South. Local spot buyers
say they find indications In the interior
of holding movement having started. Of-i
western Arkansas and at several Ala
bama and Georgia towns. Indications are
for cloudy, misty weather over Sunday
with local preclptatlon.

offerings by the South. As long as spots
are being flung at spinners they justly
see no reason for hurried buying, but as
soon as the article shows resistance

The Journal of Commerce continues op

had a very narrow market today, which
lost a few points on the usual Saturday
dullness.
Early next week the markets will pre
pare for the census report on Wednes
day. which is expected to show around
ten million ginned to November 1. As
speculative Interests and trade Interests

pend on further short selling.

and about a cent higher at the opening
today on firm cables and the general be
lief that the ware of liquidation has
passed. Offerings were light and aborts
were covering. At Liverpool wheat dis-
!d a steady undertone at the start,
shorts were Inclined to cover. Of
ferings were lighter. The marekt closed
% to %d higher.
Corn was up % to %c and ruled strong
Investors led in the buying. Unsettled
weather forecast in the belt and cov

CONDITIONS.
Atlanta, Nov. 4.—Tho area of high at
mospheric pressure has passed eastward
to the middle Atlantic coast and a mod
erate rise In temperature has taken place
almost everywhere.
Generally .unsettled weather prevails
over a very large portion of the United
States, except the extreme southwestern
states from Colorado to southern Cali
fornia, where clear skies are reported.
Light showers have fallen at many
scattered stations.
A new disturbance, or storm, with tho
pressure below 29.8 Inches has appeared In
the Canadian Northwest, which is causing
somewhat warmer weather In the North

for goods has been steady enough in a
broad sense during September and Octo
ber to warrant many mills In resuming
operations in full, and spinners arc un
doubtedly using more cotton today than
they were a month ago. Many large mills
have the November and December prod
uct under ordor, and not a few mills have
business enough ahead to insure steady
operations well Into spring:
