Calvjn M. Hitch, executive secretary
to Governor Smith, will not go to
Washington with the new senator.
Some time ago Governor Smith tender
ed Mr. Hitch the position at Washing
ton, and he tentatively accepted, but
very recently he has changed his plans,
and will remain In Georgia. ..With Sam
Wr Joiner, he will be state manager
of the Columbian Woodmen, a fra
ternal and benevolent Insurance organ
isation organized several years ago by
Governor Smith, the late General Clem
ent A. Evans, and other prominent
Georgians, and which now has about
20,000 policyholders. Mr. Hitch was
associated with the Columbian Wood
men during the two years between Gov
ernor -Smith's administrations, having
be**n private secretary to Governor
Smith in his first ntjministration.

Savannah, Ga., Nov. 15.—John Wil
lis Worley, on trial for the murder of
James H. Turner, a colored restaurant
keeper and automobile driver, was thla
afternoon adjudged guilty in the supe
rior court and sentenced to life Impris
onment In the penitentiary, The young
Alabaman pleaded self-defense, declar
ing the deAd man had drawn a gun on
himself/and Boggs, the f co-defendant,
who is Inow facing trial on a similar
charge. Judge Charlton did not finish
Instruction to the. Jury until long after
midnight and the jury did not retire
until 3 o'clock this morning. Turner
was killed on the Augusta road follow
ing nn automobile ride contracted for
by the two defendants and his body
thrown into an abandoned well.
The young men state that the diffi
culty followed an attempt on the part
of Turner to charge them an exorbitant
rate for the Vide.

was hotly scored In a signed statement
today by Governor James H. Hawley,
criticising the president for granting a
pardon yesterday to. Clarence W. Rob
nett, bookkeeper In the Lewiston Na
tional bank at Lewiston, who wna con
victed of embesslcment and Sentenced
to ton months Imprisonment. Govern
or Hawlev declared that the pardon
has brought Justice into disrepute and
weakened the courts of the state.
