Change Announced in Pastor
ate of Egelston Memorial
M. E. Church.
Huntsville, Ala., Dec. 8.—The gov
ernment today began presenting Us ev.
idence against John W. Knight, charged
with using tho malls to defraud. A
large number of bills of lading pur
porting to show shipments of cotton
by Knight. Yancey & Co', were of
fered and declared to be spurious,
H. T. Drane, cotton shipping agent
for the Louisville and Nashville rail
road at Selma, was the first witness.
Six bills ot lading, giving descriptions
of cotton shipped by Knight, Yancey
A Co., were handed him and ho was
asked if he had signed his name to
them. He said he did not sign them.
His fecord bobk failed to show that the
cotton was actually shipped. Objec
tion was offered by tho defense be
cause the record 1ms not been proved.
Judge Grubb admitted the evidence and
exceptions were taken. Drane said
great deal of cotton was shipped from
Selma by Knight, Yancey & Co. A
package of fifty-odd bills of lading
were handed Drane and he was asked
to examine them. He Bald he did not
sign his name to them. He was allowed
to retire and examine the bills and
compare them with his record to as
certain if the cotton had been shipped.
T. Q. Morrow, agent for ths South
ern at Decatur, examined eight bills of
lading purporting to show cotton
shipped by Knight, .Yancey & Co., to
which his name was signed. He denied
that he had signed any of them, and
Ills records show that the cotton was
not shipped. Defense objected to this
because the record Is not proved. Wit
ness said E. S. Morrow has authority
to sign witness’ name to .bills of lad
ing, but be did not sign the name to
these bills. Witness said he Is familiar
with Knight's handwriting, but he
could not say If these bills were signed
by Knight.

New York, Doc. 8.—The climax In the
trial of Lillian Graham and Ethei Con
rad. the two show girls who peppered
tho legs of MUllonalre W. E. D. Stokes
with bullets, was reached today while
the plaintiff was lying critically III at
tho Ansonta.
Miss Graham, to whom the aged mil
lionaire paid marked attention even at
the time when he married Ills second
'wife, took the stand before a crowd
that packed the court and told the story
of her relations with Stokes. Several
times she seemed on the verge of col
lapse and at Intervals her lawyer let her
rest until she recovered her composure.
Her story as she told It showed care
ful grooming on the part ot her lawyer.
She emphasized .various points with
dramatic effect and occasionally glanced
appesllngly at the jurors.
Miss Graham broke down.when her
attorney asked her about conversations
she had with Stokes regarding her vo.
cation In lire.
Mies Graham said she was 23 years
old and was bom In Seattle.
In September, 1906 she had gone to
live with Mrs. Singleton at the An
sonla and eoon after met Mr. Stokes.
"Do you recall receiving a letter from
Mr. Stokes while you were in Memphis,
Tenn., about coming to the Stokes stock
farm?’’
"Yes, sir.”
“Do you remember going to Lexing
ton 7"
"Yes, sir, I do," she replied.
Then. In answer to her lawyer’s ques.
tlon, she told of her visit as follows:
"Mr. Stokes met me when I arrived In
Lexington. I expected to see some oth.
er guests, and he said he expected some;
Up to that time I believed Mr. Stokes
honest.” Here the wltnesa declared
Stokes had asked her to sign a paper
before she left his farm.
Lawyer Jordan handed the witness
the "confession" Stokes alleges she
made In New York that she was not a
good girl, and that he need not fear
her.
Did you ever sign euch a paper?"
asked Jordan.
"No. I did not,” answered the girl.
"Miss Graham, was the statement In
that paper true when you wrote It?"
•Tea, sir."
Was It true before you went to that
place?"
"No, sir." *
"Did you refuse to sign such a pa
per?”
"Yes. I did not want to."
"But you did sign It?”
"Yes, sir. I did."
“What did Stokes say about It when
you signed It?"
"He said he did not want to get Into
any more trouble with women."
••Did you tell your sister or Col
onel Singleton, your brother-in-law,
anything that had happened at Lex
ington?"
"No. sir.”
"Why?"
"Mr. Stokes saw me the next day
after I came back to New York. He
begged me on his bended knees not to
tell anybody anything about him. He
’leaded with me because ot his little
oy—eo. I never told."
