E**t Atlanta—itt father*, mother*,

tion company'* witness rank* went to
the assault vigorously.
Witness after witness, young women
In fashionable frock*, testified that
Mis* Cook wa* not hurt at all In the
wreck on the.Decatur line some eight
een months ago. Several of them ex
hibited In the evidence that a neigh
borhood feud wa* raging In East At
lanta, In which Miss Cook, herself a
.pretty young person, was playing the
storm center.
> One of tho witnesses admitted she
wa* the daughter of a street car motor-
.man who had worked for the Georgia
Railway and Electric Company for fif
teen year*, and another said that Mr.
■ Simmon*, of the Georlga Railway and
; Klcctrtc Company, had told both her
and her mother that they would ba
"paid for their time and trouble."
The wreck In which MUs Cook was
Bald to have been hurt was relegated
; to the background and th* neighbor
hood gossip of East Atlanta took the
'center of the stage. The military hls-

dictments, vas detailed critically and
■ an episode in which two young women
and an unfortunate young man fell out
of a porch swing wa* under the cal

MISS ISABEL LE LOWE.
Miss Lowo was recently asked to
write her Idea of the three strong pe
riods In tlio average girl's life. The
star of "The Dawn of a Tomorrow.”
which comes to the Atlanta theater
Thursday, Friday and Saturday this
week, wrote this sentiment:
The three strong period's In the life
of the average girl may be called ‘hav
ing religion,’ ‘being stage-struck.’ and
■first love.’ Each, In Its way. has Its
compensations. Some girls realize but 1
one of these, most of them two, and
some of them three, but I venture to
say that none have escaped all of these,
any more than the childish .attacks of
whooping cough, measles and mumps.
"By having religion, don’t Imagine I
mean that'faith that becomes a part
of our lives, that helps u* live and bear
with the trials that living brings, but
rather the period when we want to
show how we would gladly die martyrs
for belief, or Just gladly kill others for
not believing as We do.
"But It la to the girl In the stage-
struck period this friendly advice Is
dedicated. Most girls recite In schools,
arrange for or have home entertain
ments, In which they have been as
signed a part, and out of this very fre
quently occurs a girl’s first illusion
—aa to her adaptability to the stage.
Her associates and friends, In the de
sire to be agreeable, are Inclined to
flatter without really Intending any
harm, and" thus create mlsapprehen'
slon that may have a serious outcome.’

will be made against the negligent phy
sician In the recorder's court. And th#
health authorities aay they hope to get
a prominent physician first so that they
can (Ire a Rne example to all others.
As pointed out by Dr. R. T. Dorsey,
member ot the board of health, the de-
pertment statistics show that the death
rate in Atlanta from typhoid fever is
about 50 per cent. Nothing Is more
fallacious. The reason for the dispro
portion being that every death from
:yphoid is reposted, while probably not
a fourth of the coles are ever made ot
record. .
‘The Fulton County Medical asso
ciation has approved the rule of the
board of health,” soya Dr. Dorsey, "and
If the members do not conform to 1L 1
hope one of them will be the flrat to be
lined." „
UntllTecently the board of health re.
qulred report* on twelve different dle-
eases. That number has been reduced
to four—diphtheria, scarlet fever, ty
phoid and smallpox. Diphtheria and
scarlet fever mean a quarantine and a
Placarding of the house tn which It is.
Jut owing to the vigilance of Dr. Cloud*
A. Smith and Dr. J. P. Kennedy, city
health physician*, these rases are more
accurately reported than typhoid. All
that Is done In the cose of typhoid le to
quarantine the homa for Inspection.
Smallpox victims are token to the pest
house. To theae regulations many per.
sons object. The health officials say
that while some physicians fall to re
port the cates In order to thfeld their
patient* from the health requirement*,
the great majority of failure* to report
case*, especially typhoid, la due to neg
ligence. '
■’Without statistics wo can’t tell any
thing about the results of our work,”
taye Dr. Smith, head of the laboratory
of hygiene. “We must have them to
properly proceed with ‘our work of
stamping out disease.
