POULTRY SHOW,
JANUARY 8 TO 13, 1912,
-By-
GEORGIA POULTRY ASS’N
C. 0, Harwell, Secretary.
POINTERS FOR THE EXHIBITORS,
The only people
that can apprecl- A ,
uto or begin to /i UVICC
realise the Im
mense work that y ,
is connected with H rnni
a poultry »how are
the secretaries
and superintend. //,,,
ents of the now f./C
numerous shows.
The exhibitor, r\
unless he has had r'OUttry
rlcnec, one and all __
should read this / inrfnr
thru. It Is m big -t-SULlU/
undertaking for
two or three men—and In a large ehow
of 200 and over exhibitors—to attend
to It. It Is a Job that few people ore
willing to burden themselves with. Just
think for a minute of the responsibility
resting upon tho secretary and super
intendent. These two officers are never
appreciated one-half as much as they
should be. There are hundreds and
hundreds of little things that coins up
every day for weeks before and after
the show week to bfl attended to, and
during the time from close of entries
until birds are all shipped and deliv
ered the secretary and superintendent
work about twenty hours per day. A
good superintendent will have the
birds’ comfort at heart ai)d should al
ways remember the birds shipped a
long ways, on the road three and four
dnys, without food nnd water. These
birds should bo uneooped and placed
In the exhibition coops assigned to
them, fed and watered as soon as It Is
possible to do so. This Is what every
good superintendent wishes to do, but
he Is handicapped by tha clamor of
local breeders who have Just brought
their birds from tho yard that morning,
or at least tho day before—who como
to the show rootrt \yltn them and de
mand that they bo cooped right away,
often adding "that they have had no
hrrakfaat or water," and I have had
lots of them to get angry and say all
kinds of hard things. To tho local ex
hibitors—and 1 mean thoso that reach
the show In from two to twelve hours
with their birds—I particularly address
this. Remember you are only one of
a large number of the exhibitors, and
that all the others think Just a, much
of their birds as you do of yours. Bring
your birds to tho exhibition hall, set
them down Bnd go away. They will
have to bo ploced in their coops before
the Judges start on their work. If you
have had experience lt» the show room,
corns early with your blrde and turn
right in and give the whole day to help
ing coop the show. The secretary and
superintendent wish to please every
body and will try hard to do so. The
exhibitors should. make this easier lo
ilo. If your best mole bird is not on
the end of tho row next to tho malh
aisle or the light Is not exactly as good
where your numbers fall, don t think
another exhibitor was favored. Juat
remember theae numbers were assigned
one week before in tho secretory*, of-
llc beforo coops are ever put up. and
whatever you do, don't change birds
from one coop to another. The num
ber over tho bird la tho secretary’s only
record. It la a great undertaking to
check the birds out of the show room,
Every bird must be checked by coop
number and leg band number. This Is
why you should not change any bird
from one cage to another, sven tho
both should be your numbers.
